Actually, when they study black history, kids get a very anti-US government (of the time) view. Very little is whitewashed and they see Emmet Till's body, people being beaten, etc. They also learn that there's still a long way to go.

He was a black kid from Chicago (which was integrated) who was on vacation in the South and when he went into a convenience store he flirted with a white woman. Her husband and either brother or brother-in-law (I think it was brother) tracked him down and murdered him. It was big news up in Chicago and his mother had an open casket to show everyone how horrible racism was. She's very admirable and seemed very strong to me from the 30 seconds of news footage I've seen. But the whole thing was a tragedy that woke a lot of people up.
