I have heard different pronounciations, the most recent documentary I saw about him had the narrator pronounce it "Shay" (which incidentally is my brother's name) but I have also heard it pronounced "Cha". Can anyone actually shed any light on how it should be pronounced?

I've always pronounced it as "Shay" and spelt it Ché before I came to this board and no-one else seemed to do it.

It's "Ch + long A" if your native language is English.

Well, considering the Spanish language, it would be like "chay": "ch" as in chap or change and "ay" and in day or clay. Is there actually supposed to be an accent over the "e"? I never have put one on it before, but maybe there should be.

Does anyone here know Italian? 'Che' was a nickname give to Guevara as it is aparently the Italian word for friend or something similar.

I think how it's pronounced in the language it comes from would be the correct pronounciation. Unless you have all those annoying dialect differences.

I know Italian, but it's definitely not my native language. I've pronounced it "Chay" when speaking with native Italians and they've never corrected me, so it shouldn't be too far off.

Oh yeah! And, in my Holy Spanish-English Dictionary, (that I barely need anymore) it says that "¡che!" is an interjection used to attract attention - similar to "hey!" or "listen!" It also says that "che" is used in Bolivia as a term meaning "buddy" or "pal." "Che" also is a nickname for citizens of Argentina, which is Che's birthplace.... GRIFFEN! Oh, I'm sorry. I was answering a question on The Weakest Link..

Time is up. I cannot complete the question...

Yeah, Che is definetly the Argentine equivelent of saying "hey you!" Since Che said Che so much he became known as Che to his comrades. Personally I think Che really gave knew meaning to the word Che. Wow I'm all Che'd out.

As for you La Rainbeaux, youaretheweakestlink. Good bye.

    ok, now for his surname.....
Guevara is it with a silent "G" and an "H" sound like Hannibal from the A Team once said?

Honestly, I saw an old episode where he says something like
"there you were trying to be big, good guerillas like Che Huvara (how he pronounced it)."

I believe it is pronounced "Goovara." That's how I've heard most people say his last name, but more importantly im almost positive thats how it sounds in spanish.

You know, that's a good question... I really do not know for sure about the pronunciation. We typically hear it pronounced like "Guay-vara." Actually, I think it should be like "gay-vara" like the word guerrillero. It's supposed to be pronounced like "gair-ee-yero." The u should not be pronounced and the e is, of course, always prounounced like a long a.... Correct me if I'm wrong some native Spanish speaker person...

DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT THAT NICKNAME!!!!! Seriously, the closest thing to a nickname I've ever gotten is "ARAAAAB!!". It's funny at first, but gets boring. Che would be cool.

Also, I don't think its Italian, I read a biography and they had said portugese if I remember right, if not its just a local Spanish word used mostly in Argentina.
