YES! I remember those bastards, what happened to Jacobo Arbenz is a wonderful idictment of bourgoir democracy.

It shows simply that the Latin american people are alllowed access to democracy as long the government they elect reflects the interests of U.S. corporations.

One of my most treasured videos is the footage of Castro nationalising the Unitied fruit company.
I t was disgusting wwhat happened in guatemala , a coup which also involverd the U.S. government.

Whenever I am told that socialism leads to dictatorship I point to the examples of guatemala and Chile and nicuragua and venezuela, where democracy was threateneed not by socialism but by the American governments and coroporations.

Where did you get the footage of Castro, Reuben?

The term "banana republic" seems to reflect well most of Latin America under United Fruit. Anderson's Che biography delves well into the discrimination that took place against the natives of each country by white bosses.
“There are no boundaries in this struggle to the death. We cannot be indifferent to what happens anywhere in the world, for a victory by any country over imperialism is our victory; just as any country's defeat is a defeat for all of us.” – Che Guevara

“We still believe that the struggle of Ireland for freedom is a part of the world-wide upward movement of the toilers of the earth, and we still believe that the emancipation of the working class carries within it the end of all tyranny – national, political and social.” – James Connolly

United Fruit Company = Chiquita !
"The proletariat, when it seizes power [...] should and must at once undertake socialist measures in the most energetic, unyielding and unhesitant fashion, in other words, exercise a dictatorship, but a dictatorship of the CLASS, not of a party or of a clique -- dictatorship of the class, that means in the broadest possible form on the basis of the most active, unlimited participation of the mass of the people, of unlimited democracy." - Rosa Luxemburg

CirianB, it was on a documentary about Comrade Castro that I taped off channel 4 on the 40th anniversary of the revolution.

Really inspiring. Unfortunately it is currently lent to my tory history teacher , with the hope that it may go someway to swaying her from her allegiance with capital.

Yes, this is another example how
democratic socialism or even ideas less
left-wing than that get people killed and that's
all--except in the imperialist countries themselves
where the rulers give great concessions by
paying from their Third World super-profits.

If you know about the 30,000 killed when the Marines/Pinochet ousted the elected Salvador Allende
of Chile, you know why scientific (as opposed to
wishful thinking people) are communists, not
    democratic socialists.

    maoist3,

I agree with you, but Pinochet and his army didn't kill 30,000 on Sept 11th 1973. From truth committees set up after Pinochet's 17-year rule, it was found that about 2-3,000 were killed or 'missing.'
