This collectice organization was recently set up in my city. The "why food not bombs" section gives some very good points supporting the humanitanian, and environmental advantages to veganism (and vegetarianism) Its worth a read.

Man's dearest possession is life, and since it is given to him to live but once.He must so live that dying he can say, all my life and all my strength have been given to the greatest cause in the world, the liberation of mankind
    Ostrovski

    Muriel Spark:

If I had my life to live over again I should form the habit of nightly composing myself to thoughts of death. I would practice, as it were, the remembrance of death. There is no other practice which so intensifies life. Death, when it approaches, ought not to take one by surprise. It should be part of the full expectancy of life. Without an ever-present sense of death life is insipid. You might as well live on the whites of eggs.

We've got this over in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where I live. It's run by collective of musicians, writers and artsy-fartsy types, and even though it's small in scale, they actually help people more effectively than big charity organisations that take your money and do whatever they want with it. There is more transparency with Food Not Bombs programmes, even with it's limited outreach. It's a start!
The prolonged barrage engulfed Zero-One in the glow of a thousand suns. But unlike their former masters with their delicate flesh, the machines had little to fear of the bombs' radiation and heat. Thus did Zero-One's troops advance outwards in every direction. And one after another, mankind surrendered its territories. So the leaders of men conceived of their most desperate strategy yet. A final solution: the destruction of the sky.

Wow, thats very cool...I didn't realize that it ran all over the world. Its about the same, here. Its run my musicians and artists for the most part, but it actually has quite an impact. Our government gives quite a bit of money to various organizations, but as a geneal rule, the small scale, locally run organizations have the most effect.

They are also active in my town (Düsseldorf, Germany). Although I don't like most vegan food, I think they are doing a great job!
"The proletariat, when it seizes power [...] should and must at once undertake socialist measures in the most energetic, unyielding and unhesitant fashion, in other words, exercise a dictatorship, but a dictatorship of the CLASS, not of a party or of a clique -- dictatorship of the class, that means in the broadest possible form on the basis of the most active, unlimited participation of the mass of the people, of unlimited democracy." - Rosa Luxemburg

So, I guess it's kind of 'big', after all...
