Being a socialist is not about lifestyle (although some think it is...), but about changing society to a higher form of being. Socialists do so by being organised, typically in revolutionary organisations (the Committee for a Workers' International is an example). These organisations strive to form leading cadres capable of leading class struggle and let class consciousness grow to the point where the working class takes revolutionary conclusions and organises their own form of state, opposing the capitalist order.

    In a nutshell anyway.

I think, too, that it's just about applying the conclusions you come to politically into your personal life. Of course, there isn't one "set way" to be an anarchist/socialist/communist. For instance, though, anarchists (who have anti-authoritarian, non-hierarchical, egalitarian tendencies) would try not to reproduce sexism or patriarchy in their personal relationships, would probably try to seek out living arrangements that are more in line with their views (more communal, etc.), and try to foster community (through relationships, projects, infoshops, etc.).

I don't think it's about lifestylism versus collective action. It's about being consistent in your personal life, when you're not organizing, with your political views. The personal is the political, they say. I think it's also important to be an example of politics in action. It's one thing to advocate for an end to racism, sexism, etc., and another to live in a way that seeks to abolish those things.

Agreed. I'm fucking sick and tired of hearing people argue that being a decent person is antithetical to socialism. If you're a socialist, organize and live out your politics. Be generous and conciliatory. Don't stand for violations of people's rights.

In a collectively owned society based on needs and not greed, people would live their lives the same general way they do now. They would work and through that work, a nation of the proletariat would collectively manage their funds so that everyone has a share of the prosperity. This would eliminate the profit motive for companies, which leads to sub-par products and services. There's no reason why people cannot have what they need and what they desire in a socialist society. The bourgeoisie is a completely unnecessary aspect of society. Every single day, workers are not paid the full fruits of their labor and the goods and services they produce are sold to line the pockets of the corporate elite and the wealth oligarchy. This class does not have to exist.

Instead, we can fuel our society together. Instead of that $10,000 an hour going into the pockets of the wealthy executive, it can be used to make sure the people have food and shelter. It can be used to fuel innovative energy and transport systems. The only difference between the day-to-day living in a free enterprise society and the day-to-day living of a collective worker's nation would be the lack of chains binding down society from achieving prosperity which works for people, not for profit.
