Anyway, my question to you all is why is the war in Iraq a Imperialist War? What backing do you have that we are in this for oil and personal gain rather than the liberation of the Iraqi people? Where are the facts?
We are under the impression that this is an imperialistic war because if it really was a war of liberation, most of the world would not be condemning it. Additionally; I hardly see how invading an already crippled nation and bombing a heavilly populated city is going to achieve anything short of more anti-american sentiment among the Middle East. Chances are that since the start of this war, Saddam Hussein's popularity among the Iraqi people have increased. We believe that this is a war for oil because the entire justification for this war was that the United States is upholding the policies of the United Nations, ironically by completely going against their decisions. If the war was trying to liberate opressed people; there are thousands of nations that they should be dealing with. According to most Right-Wingers, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela are evil communist dictatorships in which the people are opressed. Why then, are they not taking any actions against these nations? Then they will claim that the war is to prevent people from developing weapons of mass destruction. Why then are they not even criticizing North Korea? Not only is it a known fact that they are likely developing nuclear weapons; unlike Iraq who at least allowed the United Nations inspectors to investigate. North Korea outright kicked them out. These double-standards have led us to believe that this war is nothing but an opportunistic attempt to sieze a nation's natural resources.
Also, what can you guys tell me about how the United States has been an Imperialist Country in the past. I'd appreciate your insights, thanks.
The country was founded on Imperialism. It's not like the United States was just some seed that grew. They annexed this entire nation; first by annhialating the native population; then by annexing land owned by the Mexicans. Puerto Rico was annexed; so was Hawaii. The United States has had a long campaign of imperialism. Vietnam and all those Wars against Communism are wonderful examples. Not only have the participated in military imperialism, they have had a long record of economic imperialism as well. Corporations taking root in poorer, less fortunate nations and paying the people there the minimum amount of money to produce the maximum amount of products. They see no problem with this; however when the victims of these nations seek to escape and migrate to the United States in hopes of bettering themselves they are labeled as immigrants and discriminated against for taking hard working American jobs. Let us not forget the good ol' days of candy bars for ten cents, McCarthyism, Hollywood Blacklists, Segregation, and Slavery.
