where can we donate to?

Thank to various generous donations of you, Che-Lives has it's own server now. The server is located in Canada and is pretty cheap for a web server ($99 monthly). Now Che-Lives has 10GB of webspace and 100GB of monthly bandwidth. Beside that 'cgi limit reached' errors are now history, the server is making several new features for Che-Lives possible like RealMedia streaming and a ftp server. I'll also set up e-mail accounts now for all donators, and I'm considering to host other leftist sites on the server.
Now were we have the server regular donations are essential for the survival of Che-Lives!

The ads are making actually making less money than you might think in times of the dot com crisis. In some month it was't more than $10! Pop-ups would pay better, but are also much more anoying. The advantage of pop-ups is that they are not destroying the look of the site.
So what do you think, pop-ups or banners?

Malte,
Glad to hear the news, but just wondering about pop-ups and banners. If you can regulate their frequency, it seems me fair dinkums, but if you have no control it will spoil the appearance of the site to users. Do control the frequency and size of the stuff or is it a free for all?
Just asking.
Seems to me, you have to perform a balancing act, and if it without your control, it could become a bit of a major irritation for all members of the community.
If the pop ups only last for a few seconds and are a moderate size, again it seems to me fair dinkums, but are we going to need to get rid of them ourselves like with some adverts and will we have to be constantly clicking on them to get rid of the eyesores? Basically, what are we getting?
Don't know how they work or what control you will have or how they will affect the appearance of what we see. Would like to know more, although, if it is ultimately an either or situation between accepting this form of advertising and having too limited resources, you are really in my view forced to take the bit between the teeth, and make no apologies for using these pop-ups and banners.
You have to make a balanced judgement and weigh up the pros and cons, based upon not just present resources, but whatever else you wish to add to the community to make it more attractive to users. More power to your elbow!
May the Force be withU!

Pop ups really suck man. Banners don annoy me nearly as much. But whatever u gotta do to pay those bills i guess.

Yeah, I hate pop ups big time.
99$ a month is quite a bit of money, is this the only option you have Malte?
Is there anyway to buy a server outright?
A one time payment or something.

No MJM, that's not possible. You always have to pay a monthly fee for the housing (bandwidth, electricity etc). And $99 is at the low-end, even just for the housing.

I do know someone who set up their computer to host his website. He also set up folders on his computer to be an FTP host.
The problem is you need a Really fast line (T3), He was running a cable line and it was still really slow.
If you got a fast line and a pretty fast computer and installed Pearl, PHP, CGI etc on it you might be able to do it and a T3 is a 24/7 connection. The only problem is hackers and the like.

The set-up of the new server is now complete, you all may have experienced some difficulties in the last days, so sorry for that! Everything should work now, but if you still have any difficulties on the new server, please let me know.
I have enabled RealMedia streaming now for the speeches and videos in the archive, and all downloads are now stored on a fast ftp server.
I'm also now offering e-mail accounts @che-lives.net on the new server for a fixed yearly fee (of course all donators are still getting their accounts as promised).

But you'll need PHP and MySQL.
If your interested get YaBB SE from http://www.yabb.info

Actually, I've been experiencing some really annoying difficulties. Most of the avatars have been replaced by a small sign that says "Stealing Bandwidth Causes Cancer!" and it's pissing me off. The pictures in the gallery have the same problem. What the hell is going on? I thought it would go away, but it's been a week or so.
Has anybody else this problems? The little picture that you mentioned is only supossed to pop up if anybody calls the pictures from external site. So if you are doing that, I can't help you there. If not please tell me which browser are you using?
