The End of The People?
By HENRY MILES
Editor In-Chief
Recently, a supporter of the League learned from the editor of The People, the newspaper of the Socialist Labor Party, that it had indefinitely suspended publication due to lack of funds.
For those who are not aware, The People is the oldest socialist newspaper in the U.S., launched in 1890 to succeed the Working Men’s Advocate — the namesake of this publication. The SLP, likewise, is the oldest socialist organization in the U.S., formed in 1877 as the Workingmen’s Party of the U.S.
Even though the League has a number of doctrinal and other differences with the SLP, we consider the possible end of The People as a great loss to the working class, due primarily to its historic role as a voice for communist theory and action in its heyday.
Any of our readers who are so inclined are encouraged to send monetary assistance to The People to get it publishing again. You can send it to: The People, P.O. Box 218, Mountain View, California 94042-0218, or via their website: www.slp.org.
