What are your opinions of Thomas Paine?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Paine
He was an advocate for Republicanism and Liberalism, whilst dismissing monarchy and viewing all governments as, at best, a necessary evil.
He opposed slavery and was one of the earliest proponents of universal, free public education and a guaranteed minimum income! (remember this is in the late 18th century).
He was a true radical back when it actually meant something.

"A new centrist project does not have to repeat these mistakes. Nobody in this topic is advocating a carbon copy of the Second International (which again was only partly centrist)." (Tjis, class-struggle anarchist)
"A centrist strategy is based on patience, and building a movement or party or party-movement through deploying various instruments, which I think should include: workplace organising, housing struggles [...] and social services [...] and a range of other activities such as sports and culture. These are recruitment and retention tools that allow for a platform for political education." (Tim Cornelis, left-communist)
he even gets a mention in the lyrics of 'renegades' by rage against the machine.

He also supported women's suffrage and animal rights.
"We are now becoming a mass party all at once, changing abruptly to an open organisation, and it is inevitable that we shall be joined by many who are inconsistent (from the Marxist standpoint), perhaps we shall be joined even by some Christian elements, and even by some mystics. We have sound stomachs and we are rock-like Marxists. We shall digest those inconsistent elements. Freedom of thought and freedom of criticism within the Party will never make us forget about the freedom of organising people into those voluntary associations known as parties."

Are you replying to MY post above and trying to link Thomas Paine to the "renegade" Kautsky?![]()

Not quite a socialist, of course, but for his time, he was as progressive as they got.

Very good man. An honest man who, when it comes to politics, deserves to be remembered as a great purveyor of liberty. If I remember rightly, he was critical of the American regime as it abandoned the principles Paine fought for. I think that if he were around in the 20th century, he would have most certainly been a communist/socialist.
