Ok, I've been to my share of protests, rallies, demonstrations, etc. and I've come to one conclusion:

    Fuck That.

That shit is played out. Maybe it's better than sitting on your ass doing nothing, but not by much. Walking around with picket signs and cute little banners, begging people to pay attention to you ain't gonna change shit.

All these people protesting the war - shut the fuck up. Do something about the war or go home. The public sees you on TV and thinks you're pussies and pacifists and take the anti-war movement for a joke.

All these people protesting IMF meetings - gimme a fucking break. Oh, the ceo's at the World Bank are gonna look outside, see people protesting economic injustice and give a shit? You think their hearts are gonna grow three sizes like the Grinch's when they here you singing and they'll go tear down the capitalist world order? right... You wanna protest inequality, take your 10,000 friends down to Wall Street, or the IMF Headquarters, and shut that shit down for a couple days.

and I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

It's 2002 - it's time to do something REAL before it's too late.

Noise is always good and Civil Disobediance. It made Nixon finally pull troops out of Vietnam.

The intent of protests is to show mass discontent. It sends the message "We don't agree with your policies. -- Change them."

If it's a smart leader, it will listen.

They are paying attention. They send the police out in full force to hedge them off. And the number of protesters are growing and growing!!!!

I don't think there is enough protests! I think there should be protests ALL the time about EVERYTHING. Screw waiting for the big organized ones.

You can stand on the street by yourself with a cardboard sign stating your cause, and you have a protest going. People will join.

no, I disagree. And they don't send police out in full force any more, they send out people to control the crowd and that's it. They've realized the fact that fighting with protestors just gives them what they want and gains them even more attention from the media.

What is a protest? Just a way of a) gaining attention for your cause and B) begging for a handout from the government.

well there's too many fukking causes looking for attention, so the whole protest thing is played out. Nobody cares when they see someone holding a sign *****ing about this injustice or that, cuz ever where they look someone is *****ing about something but doing shit about it. You wanna draw attention to your cause show them you're serious about it.

You're absolutely right in that the protests don't matter to the corporate executives or the government. However, they are good for gaining attention from your fellow citizens. Perhaps they are more successful where I live simply because I live in a semi-rural area and thus it's kind of quiet and we don't have a lot of protests. I can see what you're saying about protests being overdone, I can see that in the cities. I still think even in the cities they can have some effect though. A posts of CheG without an insult and with something I even can agree to. Hooray for that!

The truth is, small protests may be somewhat ineffective, but huge protests are bound to scare the govt. into doing something - at least in democratic countries, if for no other reason than they still have elections to win.

Seriously, though, what are you proposing we do?

Yeah, I was thinking that, it's possible. They were dressed pretty casually though, normal street clothes.

A friend of mine who was at the IMF demonstrations in DC this past weekend, and is a Veteran of large scale demonstrations said that she saw more police there last weekend than normally... With traps set to round up large packs of people traveling in the city. She was walking in a group of 50 when an army of policemen pounced on them... she was lucky to excape in the scatter.

These protests are only going to grow in size and therefore importance.

I agree. As long as we've got the numbers, we have the influence.

oh really... then explain who it was in full riot gear (with his 40 or so comrades behind him, just on one street) who pepper sprayed me full in the face for not disappearing when he pushed me? I couldn't move; there were too many people.

And what about that protest, oh i dunno, a week or so ago in Washington DC? The gov't sent out 27,000 police... AND I haven't heard how many protestors there were.

Fighting with the protestors gives the PIGS what THEY want- excitement, and they get to come to more because they provoke the protestors into starting "riots".

"Do something about the war or shut up"... WTF?
The lack of logic in that one sentence is astounding.
Don't protest but do something about the war? Like what? Shoot pigs and gov't officials? Oh maybe youre gonna take a shot at the prez. Yeah right.

explain to me exactly what you hope to accomplish by standing on the street and chanting slogans back and forth.

It's just like an interactive flyer/leaflet...that is if your protesters have some idea what they're talking about.

Protests are mainly for unity within the people. I don't think they believe people will listen to their protests; it's a good place to gather people, and show support for something. Besides; you haven't come up with any 'better' ideas perception.

Protest is the flame -- it's the loud mass complaint of discontent. It's the seed of revolution.
