A 16-year old anti-racism campaigner has been stabbed to death during violent clashes with neo-Nazis in the Spanish capital Madrid.
Carlos Javier Palomino was one of several hundred activists trying to prevent an anti-immigration rally by a far-right party on Sunday.
Police detained a 24-year old man on suspicion of carrying out the stabbing in the Legazpi metro station.
The clashes follow recent reports of racially-motivated attacks in Spain.
The violence reportedly broke out when members of the small right-wing National Democracy party encountered a group of left-wing activists in the Legazpi station.
Mr Palomino was stabbed in the heart and treated at the scene but rescuers were unable to save him.
The man accused of stabbing him is believed to have been a participant in the anti-immigration rally.
Reports say at least eight other people, including a policeman, were injured in the violence, and emergency workers set up mobile hospitals to treat the injured.
Hundreds of anti-racism protestors later brandished sticks and threw rocks and Molotov cocktails as they attempted to stop the rally from taking place.
The violence was condemned by Madrid's community justice spokesman, Alfredo Prada.
"Madrid is an open and integrated region where there is no room for racist, xenophobic or extremist expressions," Mr Prada told the Associated Press.
The clashes came weeks after a racially-motivated attack on a teenaged Ecuadorean girl provoked widespread indignation.
The number of immigrants in Spain has grown rapidly in recent years and they now makes up 10% of the population.
A recent poll for Publico newspaper found that most Spanish people are unhappy with the Socialist government's handling of immigration.

"On November 11 in Madrid, a local neo-Nazi party, Democracia Nacional — which, incidentally, have adopted the imagery which recently helped the far right in Switzerland gain record votes — organised a public rally, officially in order to protest “anti-Spanish racism” (sic). (Spain in November is apparently replete with racist and fascist demonstrations of one sort or another.) Madrid antifa organised a counter-protest. On their way to it, a small group of antifa encountered some of the neo-Nazis in or near a train station. A fight broke out, and a 16 year old antifa was stabbed to death, and a number of others (perhaps six) injured. One person has been arrested by police and charged with the murder. what the fuck is going in spain? there's been many recent attacks on latinamerican and african inmigrants, and despite these have been made public by the media the courts remain quiet and these prick walk away, and remain safe to cause more harm. I send all my support to comrade Carlos family and friends, and I think the best way to honor him is to organize better antifa and fight the scum out of the streets!

A demonstration summoned by the facist and nazi party "National Democracy" was going to be blocked by Spanish anti-facists.
A group of these anti-facists went inside the last metro wagon, where one of the facists from the demonstration was sitting (his name Josué E. de la H.). The anti-facists noticed he was sitting in front of them, when he suddenly got up, said "what are you looking at!?", took out a machete and stabbed the youngest of the group, with 19 years old called Alejandro Jonatan M. M., cleaving him in the heart and killing him. The facist also stabbed another three, then ran away while the rest of the anti-facist group went after him (they were able to injure him). Thereafter, the police found the facist and arrested him. Three anti-facists now lie in the hospital, one of them with a deep injury and one anti-facist dead, still a teenager.

This party has a legal status as a political party, their demonstration was going to take place with the approval of the head national police in Madrid.
This is a serious issue, since the government hereby is accepting Nazi demonstration to take place, -despite the Spanish law against racism & xenophobia.
Spontaneous demonstrations took place in Madrid, as-well as other major Spanish cities, to condemn the Nazi violence.
In Madrid the demonstration led to fights with the police.
There has been a increase of nazi aggressions in Madrid during the last year.

Even after Carlos' death Antifascist attacked the Nazi demonstration, which was being protected by the police.
