This really isn't about communism or anything but I would like everyone to read it and send a fax.

    Dear friends,

I just sent a quick fax to Prime Minister Chrtien, urging him to adopt the Kyoto Protocol.
Just recently in Europe, the Prime Minister pushed for more loopholes in the climate treaty to avoid making real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Virtually no country in world is accepting the Canadian proposal and it appears that it may be a move to justify pulling out of the treaty altogether, and give in to the interests of polluting industries.
If you can, visit http://www.davidsuzuki.org to urge the Prime Minister to support Kyoto.
Kyoto is the only global strategy to address climate change - the worlds biggest environmental challenge. Urge the Prime Minister to act with 8 of 10 Canadians, Europe, Japan, and the overwhelming majority of countries around the world in support of the Kyoto Protocol.
    Thanks for your time

Climate change is such a serious issue and the Canadian government is being very pathetic with their attempts to stop it or do anything about it. *I would really appreciate it if any person on this site could send a fax. *You don't have to be living in Canada to send one. *Also please tell everyone you know, if you wish to.

    Thanks a lot.

    Peace

Thanks. I already signed a large petition coming from BC about this. This whole Kyoto debacle is such an embarrassment for all industrial nations. They simply refuse to see the light- or smog- at the end of the tunnel. They can only keep their heads in the sand so much longer...

At least if there's a world left to do so FOH,
Over here it's like they want us to die from pollution. We had a Reclaim The Streets party against the air and noise pollution cars cause in cities and we got the shit beaten out of us for it by the pigs.
There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror... --- Mark Twain

Reuters- Planet earth is warming up faster than previously expected, the head of a leading climate research institute said on Monday. Dying forests, expanding deserts and rising sea levels would wreak havoc to human and animal lives sooner than anticipated as global warming was accelerating, said Geoff Jenkins, head of the Hadley Center for Climate Prediction and Research.

From what I've read, the most damaging pollution doesn't come from the most advanced nations, but instead comes from developing nations. I'll see if I can dig up some facts on taht...

Either way though, it's due to industrial capitali$m more concerned about profits than long-term sustainability.

And, regardless, ALL nations should sign Kyoto. But, hmm, even the most "advanced" nations find it too hard to live by. Curious that...

Yes a lot of pollution does come from developing nations but from sites owned by MNC's. I think it was in S America that they had to move cows off an area of land owned by McDonald's because the cow shit and their farting was releasing too much methane into the atmosphere.

The three most polluted countries are Canada, U.S.A and Russia and they are all developed.

    my thoughts: First of all,

    1. I am Canadian and pollution is a problem. It must be stopped! Kyoto protocol is a good idea.

    2. You can't stop climate change: The earth has been changing climate for Billions of years! CO2 emmisions are vital to a GREEN enviroment...plants live on it! So if C02 emmisions are high, there should be more plant life, which inturn makes more oxygen for us!!!

    ...."Fires of History"...you wrote
"Global Warming is happening faster than previously expected"

I was wondering if you knew how long Science has been looking at climate accurately?
...you see...I have a problem, and that is : if the most powerful country in the world : USA: wanted to control progress in Industry overseas...how do you think it might do that? It would probably invent the Global Warming theory? Right? Keep other nations dependant and subservant to the US** What a global consperacy**
Guess what...the USA invented "global warming"!

Maybe I'm just paranoid?! What do you think?

I think that you are being a little paranoid. The U$ is good, but not that good.

Global warming is a long established scientific phenomena with decades of international study behind it.

Yes, Earth has always changed its climate, but never so quickly.

People like to ignore environmental warnings, but when the seasons start to change people will finally have to wake up and realize their is a WORLD tied to their box of Corn Flakes. That is, if we can grow corn in a century.

Yes, CO2 is necessary for the growth of plants but high CO2 levels do not lead to greater plant life. Carbon dioxide is the main beneficiary to the Greenhouse effect which causes global warming which will eventually flood the planet. Not many plants can survive under water. CO2 is also a contributor to smog which plagues much of Asia.

    ID2002,

No, it's not. There is no such thing as a stupid question.

A lot of people like to believe that global warming is just that, a simple warming. But more accurately the best example of global 'warming' is when seasons become more intense, more severe, more extreme. When winter is colder and longer, that too is a result of what people call global 'warming.'

There will come a time, if nothing is seriously done soon, when the seasons become so severe that it will have disasterous effects on all of us. Imagine summers so hot that wheat can't grow, or winters so cold that livestock simply can't survive it. And so on and so forth. Seasons will become so extreme that species will start to die off, and so too will we because of all of this. We are slowly changing nature itself, and the extremes that are sure to come one day are going to cause a great dying off.

Global warming is about a warming, but the effects of that phenomena are extreme seasons. Nature's cycles are being thrown out of whack, and there will be consequences we can't even imagine.

This is what happens when you meddle in the equilibrium of nature, and eventually, it will balance itself out.

Global warming has already begun. small climate changes are being felt all over the place (record highs, lows, winds, antartica...) and even if we were to miraculously stop all fule combustion yesterday, we would still experience for years to come the retarded consecuences of our endless material CONSUMPTION. (gradual increase of temperature and all that comes with it).
what i have is a pessimist vew, for i see no way of stoping ourselves. hydrogen instead of petrol, solar pannels, windmills, all this is very recomforting but that is all it is in my view; this all takes time, and this we don't really have!...
How can we get out of this? byciles would be great, but we have become way too numerous to continue to function well only on bycicles and sail-boats, haven't we?

is an ecologically friendly society with all of us on the world possible?

I live in Canada, and one problem with trying to convince people that there's a pollution problem is that our country is huge and sparsely populated. We generally don't see the affects of our wastful ways. They have, as far as I know, started to implement the Kyoto Accord in Saskatchewan but here in Alberta people are far too conservative (and attached to their SUVs) to pay it much attention.

Its terrible how SUVs have become a fashionable yet hugely destructive trend! Here, in terms of emmissions standards, they are classified with trucks; meaning they may have higher emmissions. Meanwhile people drive them all about downtown as though they were small cars. Its disgusting.
