    SUNDAY, OCTOBER 07, 2007

Police have detained 26 neo-Nazis trying to go ahead with a banned protest after they clashed with anti-fascists holding a counter demonstration in Novi Sad, about 50km north of Belgrade.

Among those arrested was Goran Davdovic, leader of Nacionalni Stroj or National Guard, a neo-Nazi group which had called for a march for Serbian unity.

Police said Davdovic and his supporters had hurled stones at the anti-fascist protesters.

Officers said the detainees, made up of 15 Serbs and 11 Slovaks, were found to be in possession of knives, Nazi swastikas, fascist flags and propaganda material.

Nacionalni Stroj had planned the rally as a protest against the southern province of Kosovo's demands for independence from Serbia.

The march was banned after protests by Jewish groups such as the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and some Serbian organisations.

About 5,000 anti-fascists had gathered in Novi Sad to protest against what they said was the rise of fascism in Serbia.

Thousands of riot police had been deployed to prevent the two groups from clashing.

One group of anti-fascists, who had passed by a Novi Sad cafe, were attacked with stones by Davidovic's men who were dressed in black shirts and military style boots.

Several people were hospitalised with injuries from hurled stones.

Cedomnir Jovanovic, the leader of Serbia's Liberal party and who attended the anti-fascist protest, said: "It is amazing that the police let those Nazi supporters gather on the streets of Novi Sad despite the ban."

Last month, the WJC said that the planned neo-Nazi rally was a "matter of great concern" for the organisation.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre had said that the march was to mark the birthday of SS chief Heinrich Himmler and welcomed the decision to ban it.

Eight Bulgarians were arrested earlier on Sunday in Belgrade, after police said they were planning to travel to Novi Sad to join the march.

Serbian Nazis from informal organization “Nacionalni stroj” (National formation) tried to march at Novi Sad, capital of northern Serbian province Vojvodina, a multinational and multi confessional region famous for its peaceful coexistence of different ethnic minorities and religions. Minor political parties influential in that region (social democrats and liberals), together with NGOs organized anti-fascist rally in order to prevent Nazis from marching in Novi Sad. Anti-fascist action Novi Sad (with tight links with social-democrats) organized a separate block within the protest. That block of radical anti-fascists was made of mixture of anarchists, anarcho-syndicalists, commies, queers, punks and alike.

A few days before the rally, Nazi march was forbidden by police, but then clero-fascist organization “Obraz” (literal translation is: Cheek, but it actually means Honor) announced its solidarity with fellow Serb nationalists and promoted its solidarity protest rally. Nazis from “Nacionalni stroj” said that they are going to make their rally no matter what. In the atmosphere of tensions, on the 7th of October (birthday of some Nazi big shot asshole from WW2) cca 3-5.000 people gathered in Novi Sad.

Liberals and NGOs had their speeches, uninspiring and pointless for the most part. The stage was set in front of a church. On it’s left side Antifa radicals took the position. Nazi rally should have been organized just down the street 100 meters away. On the back-right side of the stage, “Obraz” members and supporters gathered chanting nationalist bullshit slogans and singing nationalistic anthems. Bu riot cops prevented any contact.

Then the speeches ended and the protest march headed down the street with Antifa block at its head. At one point Nazis were spotted in a restaurant. Immediately people started to yell at them, and give them big fuck you motherfuckers! Then the Nazis started to chant pre-prepared slogans that should somehow take the fascist stigma off their backs and portray them as god-fearing good nationalists.

But then some of the Nazis came across the yard of a restaurant (a property of Serbian army) right to the fence, just two meters away from police line and Antifa marchers. They did their usual saluting and grim faces, but then the other bastards in the yard started throwing stones at Antifa protesters. Some people got hit, some of them in the head. By then the response intensified and all the stones and more stuff was sent back at them. One of them got a cobble stone right in his fucking head.

All that time cops were letting them do their shit and were keeping an eye on Antifa march. It seems to be that they thought that the numbers of Antifa protesters are more important and that because of that they are more dangerous (and we’re speaking about a bunch of predominately middle age and older people including WW2 veterans), than the fact that Nazi gathering was forbidden and that Nazis nevertheless started throwing stones at peaceful protesters. It lasted for about 10-15 minutes and then cops got an order to star arresting Nazis. And it soon ended.

Novi Sad: Police rescues nazis from antifascist rage

On October the 7th, in Novi Sad(*), undisrupted celebration of the birthday of the Nazi murderer Heinrich Himmler, directed by Goran Davidovic "Führer"(**) and his followers from "National front" was stopped. Members of Union Confederation "Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative" (ASI) from Novi Sad, Kula and Belgrade actively participated in the antifascist block which, clearly separated from the liberals and politicians, was ready for stopping the fascists by any means. Under the banners "Against fascism, by any means necessary", "They will not pass", "Death to fascism - Death to privatization" and "Those Who don't want to fight capitalism, should be silent about fascism", antifascist block of more than 250 people, which was formed, apart from ASI, by activists of several other antifascists, antiauthoritarian and revolutionary collectives, as well as antifascist football fans, blocked the road that announced Nazi march should have taken, and than lead the antifascist demonstrations(***) towards the monument of Jasa Tomic.

At the Tomic monument we were waiting for Nazi scum, which announced it's gathering at that point at 17h. But, since the fascists didn't show up, we continued the protest walk towards the monument of the people killed by the Nazis in Novi Sad in 1942. While the demonstrations were passing by the beer hall which is part of the building of the Serbian Army, some thirty neo-nazis, hidden behind the fence of the beer hall backyard and two lines of gendarmerie, climbed up the fence and started provoking antifascists by raising hands in Nazi style and yelling "Sieg Heil!" The angry antifascists mass responded to this with very loud chanting of: "We will kill Nazis", "This is the graveyard of fascism" and "Goran, Follow your führer, and kill yourself"

In that moment, clearly annoyed, neo-nazis started attacking the demonstrations with rocks and peaces of wood from the beer hall backyard. Antifascists responding to neo-nazis in a solid and brave way. But, in this case State again showed that it is keeping it's right eye shut. Fascists were protected by the police cordons, and it was not allowed to antifascists to deal with them in the way we always did here. Few that managed to break the cordon and hit the enemies where it hurts, were beaten up by the police, and two antifascist comrades were arrested. Police reacted against the neo-nazis only in the moment when a huge rock, thrown from the beer hall backyard, hit one of the cops from the cordon in the head. After that everything was over quickly and the neo-nazis were arrested. The demonstrations than continued to the monument of the people killed by the Nazis. After the demonstrations, we were informed that some forty members of the looser clero-fascist organization "Obraz" were hiding in the backyard of the nearby church.

The actions of the police during the antifascist demonstrations, as well as their later behavior toward our arrested comrades, which were tortured in different ways in the police station, confirms what ASI was always pointing out to. Fascism, as the most extreme version of the capitalist ideology will always serve as a joker card that the ruling class can play in the moment when the working class is strong enough to shake it's power. Because of that the State, institution whose only role is keeping the governance of the class of the exploiters, will never work on total destruction of Nazi-fascist groups and organizations. Because of that the calls for stronger State reaction against the Nazis, placed forward by the politicians and liberals, are totally missed, and are witnesses of a very low level of consciousness and lack of understanding of reality within the representatives of the so called civil society in Serbia. Fight against fascism starts with a fight against capitalism and the State!

Against fascism, by any means necessary!
Death to fascism, freedom to the people!
