    Sunday: 2 GIs, 69 Iraqis Killed; 74 Iraqis Wounded


    Due to the holiday news blackout, a significant suicide bombing yesterday in Samarra went unreported until today. Overall, at least 69 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 74 more were wounded in the latest attacks. Most were civilians. Two American soldiers were reported killed in separate events.

    An MND-B soldier was killed and three were wounded today during combat in southern Baghdad. Meanwhile, a Task Force Lightning soldier was killed in a non-combat incident in Ninewah province.

    A car bomb killed at least 18 people and wounded 37 others near a mosque in Samarra. The bomber had been shot to death by police but still managed to detonate his explosives. After the explosion, gunmen clashed with police. In a separate incident, a suicide bomber attacked a police commando station; four police commandos were killed and nine were wounded. A gunfight also followed that explosion.

    In Baghdad, Nine people were killed and 13 more were wounded, including women and children, during a car bombing near a Shi’ite shrine in Kadhamiya; a separate bomb had been found and defused in the same area earlier. An Iraqi correspondent for the Washington Post was shot dead while in the Saidiyah neighborhood. Also, five dumped bodies were recovered.

    In the village of Baghdadi near Ramadi, a suicide car bomber killed four members of a police major’s family and wounded eight others.

    Ten decomposed bodies were recovered from a village near Baquba. Two bodies were found in the al-Katoun area.

    In Haswa, the Iraqi army arrived to quell clashes between Mahdi army members and Sunni tribesmen. Four gunmen were killed and 17 more were detained. Civilian casualties are unspecified.

    Two bodies were found in al-Hadad.

    Guards protecting an oil pipeline in al-Zubair, near Basra, found gunmen planting a bomb. During the ensuing clash, one guard was killed and a second was wounded.

    In Riyadh, gunmen killed three Sunni Arabs and wounded two more during a drive-by.

    An Iraqi soldier was killed and four more were wounded during a roadside bombing in Khan Bani Saad.

    Gunmen killed a pedestrian walking outside an al-Sadr office in Hashimiya, near Hilla.

    A farmer was killed in Jurf al-Sakhar as he was trying to remove a bomb placed under his tractor.

    A body bearing gunshot and torture marks was found in Qarahanjeer.

    Pope Benedict asked for the quick return of two Catholic priests who were kidnapped from a funeral in Mosul yesterday.

    Gunmen blew up a bridge in Khalis.

    In Ninewah province, 267 detainees, who were found to be not guilty, were released during Ramadan.

    U.S. troops captured five suspects near Taji.

    Also, more witnesses near the Turkish border have reported that Turkey is shelling Iraqi locations.

    Monday: 2 GIs, 46 Iraqis Killed; 76 Iraqis Wounded


    At least 46 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 76 more were wounded in the latest violence. Figures may yet rise in two separate attacks, which occurred in Diwaniya and Balad. No foreign military deaths were reported. The DOD reported that two American soldiers were killed in separate incidents.

    The DOD reported that an American soldier was killed yesterday in al-Busayifi during combat operations, while an IED killed another soldier in Baghdad. Four National Guardsmen were injured yesterday during an explosion. Also, two Polish soldiers were wounded during fighting in Diwaniyah that also caused civilian casualties.

    In Baghdad, a suicide car bomber killed four people and wounded 25 others, mostly women and children, at al-Zawraa park in the al-Harthiya district. Also, five dumped bodies were recovered.

    In Diwaniya, a mortar and machine gun attack targeting a Polish base left five civilians dead and 28 wounded. Among the casualties were several children. Three gunmen were also killed. No casualties were reported during a mortar attack at Camp Echo, just south of Diwaniya.

    A suicide car bomber killed six members of the Salah ad Din Awakening Council during an attack on their Balad checkpoint. At least eight more people were injured.

    A policeman and four members of his family were killed when a suicide bomber drove into the policeman’s home in Heit. Eight others were wounded during the attack, which occurred west of Baghdad.

    Near Kirkuk, three journalists were killed and two were wounded when gunmen attacked their vehicle. Also, a roadside bomb wounded four people.

    Three dumped bodies were found near Ramadi.

    The body of a kidnapped Baghdad University professor was found in Basra.

    According to some reports, two Catholic priests who were kidnapped over the weekend near Tal Afar were released; however, the head of the Syrian Catholic Church said the reports were untrue and that the priests were still being held captive.

    Gunmen shot dead a civilian during a drive-by in Kut.

    Two bodies were found in Mosul. One belonged to a member of the city council.

    U.S. forces killed three suspects and detained 20 others in several locations. Also, three anti-al-Qaeda fighters were killed and one wounded accidently when a U.S. airstrike in Duluiya missed its targets.

    Tuesday: 56 Iraqis Killed, 144 Wounded


    Bombings in Baghdad and Mosul injured scores of people. Overall, 56 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 144 more were wounded. No foreign military deaths were reported.

    In Baghdad, four unidentified bodies were found dumped in as many neighborhoods. A car bomb killed seven people and wounded 30 people, mostly civilians, near an Iraqi army checkpoint and a petrol station on Saadoun Street. In Zayouna, three policemen were killed and two were injured during a drive-by shooting at another checkpoint. A roadside bomb in Karrada killed one person and injured two others. Last night in the Doura district, shelling killed one and wounded 13 more people. A streetsweeper was killed and five were wounded in a drive-by shooting as they were working on al-Aadl Street in western Baghdad. Also, an Interior Ministry officer who has provided information to NPR staffers in Baghdad has disappeared and may have been kidnapped.

    A suicide tanker truck bomber killed up to 16 people and wounded 80 more at a police station in Mosul. A number of policemen were among the casualties. A vehicle ban is now in place. Three militia members were killed last night. Also, gunmen killed a policeman.

    An Anbar Awakenings Council member, his son, and his nephew were shot dead near Fallujah.

    A decapitated and booby-trapped body was found in Abbasi. Two people were killed as they attempted to plant a roadside bomb.

    In Kirkuk, a body was found. A roadside bomb wounded two truck drivers. Last night in the al-Wasiti neighborhood, a roadside bomb killed four people from the same family. Also, three journalists who were reported killed yesterday were actually bodyguards working for an editor and not journalists.

    Eight Iraqi soldiers were wounded during a bomb attack in Iskandariya.

    Attacks on Echo Base in Diwaniya continued for a second day. In a separate incident, a policeman was shot dead in front of his home.

    In Muqdadiya, tribesmen killed a suspected al-Qaeda member during clashes.

    A roadside bomb in al-Sada wounded a militia member.

    The body of a taxi driver was found in Sulaimaniyah.

    Four civilians were kidnapped yesterday near al-Dogmat village.

    Between Mosul and Kirkuk, a pair of roadside bombs injured a man.

    A roadside bomb in Baquba killed a father and his son. Two corpses were also found.

    U.S. troops captured a "top terrorist" and three of his aides, who were involved in the Camp Victory shelling last week. An al-Qaeda suspect was arrested in Baquba. At least 50 people were arrested during the Eid holiday.

    Also, a Turkish soldier was killed during a bombing in Turkey blamed on the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

    Wednesday: 1 GI, 37 Iraqis Killed, 28 Wounded


    On a relatively quiet Wednesday, at least 37 Iraqis were killed and 28 more were wounded while tensions on the Turkish border continue. An American soldier died of a non-combat-related illness in Germany after being flown out of Tikrit. Also, an Australian soldier was shot and wounded during an incident in Dhi Qar province.

    In Baghdad, four dumped bodies were recovered. Two Iraqi civilians were injured when U.S. troops fired upon them after a traffic accident in the Wehda neighborhood. Also, two people were killed and two more wounded during a bombing in Zaafaraniyah.

    East of Diwaniya, a roadside bomb killed seven policemen; prior to the explosion, the police station had been attacked, but no casualties were reported there. Police in town arrested two provincial council members on suspicion of murder and kidnapping. Also, a roadside bomb blasted a foreign security convoy, but the number of casualties was not released.

    A suicide truck bomber attacked a Peshmerga checkpoint in Jalawla, killing one and injuring 10 more of the Kurdish fighters.

    In Baquba, one person was killed and two were wounded during a roadside bombing. In a separate incident, one Iraqi was killed during an armed attack. One gunman was killed and a policeman was wounded during clashing in central Baquba. Also, eight civilians and two Iraqi soldiers have been abducted at fake checkpoints over the last two days.

    The body of a policeman, bearing the usual gunshot and torture marks, was found in Riyadh.

    Baiji police killed three gunmen and arrested six more.

    Four Islamic Army fighters were killed during clashes with al-Qaeda members in Samarra.

    Yesterday, a gunman was injured during a clash that occurred between Abbasi and Hawija.

    South of Baghdad, four shepherds, including a 15-year old boy, were kidnapped.

    A bakery was destroyed in Balad Ruz, but no casualties were reported.

    Near the Syrian border in Qaim, a bomb at a marketplace killed five people and wounded ten more.

    A lawyer was beheaded in Kirkuk.

    U.S troops detained 15 gunmen in central and northern Iraq. The Iraqi army killed five suspects and detained 14 others in unspecified locations. Also, 350 detainees were released from U.S. custody.

    Meanwhile, the Turkish parliament voted to allow troops to cross into Iraq to crush Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) rebels based there. This does not mean they are about to take any action. Iraqi President Talabani complained about the presence of PKK rebels in Iraq.

    Thursday: 1 GI, 39 Iraqis Killed; 58 Iraqis Wounded


    In what may be more unwarranted attacks on civilians by foreign security personnel, three people were wounded during an incident in Kirkuk and five more in a separate event in Baghdad that involved U.S. troops. Overall, 39 Iraqis were killed and 58 more were wounded in attacks throughout Iraq. An explosion killed one Task Force Lightning soldier and wounded three more yesterday in Salah ad Din province.

    In Baghdad, five dumped bodies were found. A roadside bomb near the National Theater wounded three people, including a policeman. Five civilians were wounded when U.S. troops allegedly fired randomly upon them in al-Bunouk. Also, the UN released a report on conditions in Iraq; due to the ongoing violence, many are forced to scavenge food out of garbage bins.

    An Iraqi soldier was killed an three others were wounded during an roadside bombing in Arab Jubour.

    A foreign security firm wounded three civilians, two of them women, during a shooting in Kirkuk. A roadside bomb killed a man northwest of town yesterday. Also, a car bomb on a highway leading to the airport caused no casualties.

    In Basra, an explosive device detonated at a school, killed at least one person and wounded 14 others, mostly students.

    A car bomb targeting an army patrol in Hawija killed three people and wounded 11 more, including three soldiers and a policeman.

    A roadside bomb in Mosul killed two policemen and a civilian.

    Police killed three gunmen and arrested ten north of Fallujah.

    Near Baiji, U.S. troops killed three men and one woman, while a second woman was injured.

    An Awakening Council member was found dead in Dour.

    Three people were injured during a roadside bombing on a highway between Arbil and Kirkuk.

    Gunmen killed three tribesmen, members of the local Awakening Council, in Dhuluiya.

    A man and a woman were killed during clashes near Baquba.

    A police lieutenant was gunned down in Balad Ruz.

    In Tuz Khormato, the police chief was wounded.

    The Iraqi army reported killing seven suspects and detaining 41 in unspecified locations, while two suspects were killed and 15 more arrested in Baghdad; two policemen were killed and 14 more were wounded during security operations. U.S. troops captured a cell leader suspected of launching attacks in Baghdad.

    In other news, the Iraqi government wants Kurdish rebels to leave the country as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Kurds in Arbil marched against yesterday pro-incursion vote in Turkey. Also, military experts believe time is running out for Turkish troops to enter Iraq before winter.

    Friday: 2 GIs, 22 Iraqis Killed; 22 Iraqis Wounded


    At least 22 Iraqis were killed and 22 were wounded during violence that was extremely light — even for the Friday prayer day when few reporters are working. Also, two American servicemembers died in separate incidents.

    An MND-B soldier was killed and another was wounded during an IED attack yesterday in Baghdad. A Task Force Lightning soldier based in Salah ad Din province was evacuated to Landstuh, Germany where the soldier died of a non-combat-related illness.

    In Baghdad, six unidentified bodies were found dumped in several locations. Shelling wounded three people in Rashid. No casualties were reported after gunmen placed bombs around a mosque in al-Washash. Also, the body of a Baghdad University professor was found a few hours after he was kidnapped.

    Three women were killed in Mussayab when mortars fell on a residential neighborhood.

    Two bodies were discovered in Muwailha.

    A convoy belonging to a deputy working for Iraq’s prime minister came under attack in Kirkuk. A staff member and a gunman were killed, another employee was wounded. In a separate incident, no casualties were reported after gunmen bombed an oil pipeline southwest of town.

    In Riyadh, the police chief’s convoy was attacked and two guards were wounded.

    A group of policemen, returning to Baghdad from Samarra was attacked in Dhuluiya. There is no word on the number of casualties. During evening prayers, a bomb exploded underneath the pulpit of an iman who preaches against al-Qaeda; he and six others were wounded.

    Five hostages were freed in Buhriz.

    In Baquba, two Iraqi soldiers were wounded during a blast. A body was discovered. Also, police defused two explosive devices.

    Four farmers were kidnapped in Khalis.

    Four civilians were wounded and a Polish vehicle damaged during a series of bomb explosions in Diwaniya.

    Two gunmen were killed and three were wounded as they attempted to set a bomb in Shurqat.

    In Fallujah, two teenage suicide bombers were stopped before they could detonate their explosives.

    U.S. forces killed five suspects and detained two more in Tarmiyah and Baquba.

    Also, Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) are threatening to attack Turkish pipelines if Turkey attacks their bases.

    At least 24 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 32 more were wounded in the latest violence. A wanted serial killer was arrested al-Bu Owan. Also, the DOD reported that a Marine was killed yesterday in Baghdad, while an MND-B soldier was killed and eight others were wounded on Thursday.

    In Baghdad, five unidentified bodies were found dumped in several neighborhoods. A roadside bomb killed one person and two others in the al-Tobchi district. In Ghadir, a roadside bomb killed a streetcleaner and wounded three more. Gunmen set fire to a Moqtada al-Sadr related newspaper near Sadr City. Also, three policemen were killed and nine were wounded during security operations that netted 34 suspects.

    Three people were killed and nine more were wounded during a roadside bombing in Iskandariya. Three policemen were wounded during a bombing yesterday. Also yesterday, gunmen killed a local official.

    In Kirkuk, six people were kidnapped in separate incidents. A body bearing gunshot wounds was found outside of town. Three policemen were wounded during a roadside bombing.

    A roadside bomb in Hawija killed two Iraqi soldiers.

    Polish forces killed two gunmen during a previously reported incident yesterday in Diwaniya.

    A gunman tossed a grenade at a building in Basra and wounded three guards.

    Police and gunmen clashed in Karbala, where one militant suspect was arrested.

    Police in al-Bu Olwan, near Hilla, arrested an alleged serial killer suspected of slaughtering 150 people.

    Three bodies were found by police in Baquba.

    The mayor of Hettin neighborhood in the Hilla area was assassinated this morning.


    U.S. forces arrested 11 suspects in central Iraq and killed one in Baquba. Troops found 19 tons of explosives in Tarmiya. Joint Iraqi-U.S. forces detained 30 suspects in Diyala province. Also, U.S. forces raided an Iraqi Islamic Party (IIP) office and left it in shambles.

    Meanwhile, Turkey has slightly backed off its aggressive stance and now hopes that the U.S. or other Coalition member will handle the Kurd rebel issue internally.

    Sunday: 78 Iraqis Killed, 83 Wounded


    At least 78 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 83 more were wounded in the latest violence. Most of the casualties occurred during a U.S. raid in Sadr City. During incidents at the Turkish border, another 49 people were killed and 24 more were wounded. No Coalition troops were reported killed.

    A major incident occurred in the Baghdad suburb of Sadr City. A U.S. forces raid targeting a suspect believed to be kidnapping cell leader resulted in the deaths of dozens of people. U.S. authorities said a total of 49 gunmen were killed during the raid and subsequent air strikes. Police and hospital spokespeople reported that as many as 13 civilians were killed and 69 more were injured. Two toddlers were among the dead.

    In developments near the Turkish border, clashes between Kurdish rebels and Turkish troops left at least 17 Turkish troops dead and 16 wounded. The rebels claim to have taken several hostages, while Turkish authorities say that 32 rebels were killed. Ten soldiers are missing. A landmine killed one person and wounded eight others on a minibus. Also, the Turkish military continues to shell border areas in Iraq.

    Meanwhile, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, who is Kurdish, called on the rebels in Turkey to disarm. And, the leader of the Kurdish Autonomous Region said they reserved the right to defend themselves, but would not take part in the current conflict at the border.

    In Baghdad, four decomposed bodies were found buried in Amiriya overnight, and two more bodies were found today. A gunman was killed and two suspects were arrested during an U.S. forces raid in New Baghdad.

    In Mosul, two policemen were killed and two more were wounded during clashes with gunmen. A former Iraqi army officer was killed in an armed attack. Gunmen killed a cement factory employee on his way to work and a sports coach. Also, two Catholics priests were freed after a week in capti; they said they had been treated as guests by their abductors.

    Two policemen were killed and four were wounded during a suicide car bombing at a checkpoint in Fallujah.

    Shelling at an Iraqi army base in Karbala left one dead and four wounded. Also, 35 people were arrested.

    Gunmen in al-Bu Aziz killed a notable sheikh and wounded four others.

    Monday: 111 Iraqis Killed, 75 Wounded


    The Kurdistan Worker's Party has asked a skeptical Turkey for a cease fire. Overall, 111 Iraqis were killed and 75 were wounded during attacks that included a raid by Iraqi National Accord members.

    In Baghdad, five dumped bodies were found scattered in as many neighborhoods. A roadside bomb killed four people and wounded 12 others in the Karrada district. In the Zaafaraniya suburb, coordinated bombs killed three people and wounded 11 more, including three policemen. An IED killed an Iraqi soldier and wounded two others in the al-Jamiaa neighborhood. A body belonging to a driver working for an Iraqi journalist was found, the journalist is missing. And, it was reported today that gunmen killed an advisor to a senior Sunni politician on Thursday.

    Also in the capital, the Iraqi National Accord reported that 46 people were killed and 30 more wounded, including Accord members, during clashes in the al-Fadl neighborhood. They claimed that the gunmen they were battling were affiliated with al-Qaeda elements. The Accord has 25 seats in Parliament.

    As police in Karbala conducted raids they were met with resistance. During the ensuing clashes, seven people were killed and 14 more were wounded. Also, 33 suspects were arrested.

    A roadside bomb in Mosul killed one policeman and wounded four others. Five bodies, including one belonging to a female lawyer, were found. Also, three Islamic State of Iraq members were arrested.

    In a drive-by shooting in Kut, gunmen killed a former member of the now-defunct Baath Party.

    A local Sadr official was found severely wounded just hours after being detained by police in Ifach.

    An automotive engineer was gunned down in Iskandariya. Last night, two men were killed during a roadside bombing.

    A contractor was kidnapped in Hilla.

    Two Mahdi Army leaders were arrested and one of them was wounded during a raid in Diwaniya.

    Two bodies were found in Kirkuk. Also, 25 gunmen were arrested near town.

    A mass grave containing 25 bodies was found in Anbar Province.

    Three bodies, bearing gunshot wounds and torture marks, were found in Baquba.

    The Iraqi police killed three suspects and wounded 59 others in unspecified locations.

    Tuesday: 2 GIs, 60 Iraqis Killed, 42 Wounded


    At least 60 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 42 more were wounded in the latest incidents, and the DOD reported that two American sailors were killed in Bahrain. Meanwhile, the Turkish government rejected the PKK’s offer of a cease-fire; however, diplomatic talks continue. Also, U.S. President Bush has asked Congress for another $46 Billion for the continuing operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan. And, authorities claim that they finally have the deadly cholera outbreak under control.

    The Turkish Foreign Minister, Ali Babacan, is in Baghdad meeting with Iraqi leaders to discuss resolving the situation at the border. Turkey has rejected the cease-fire offered by the rebel Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK.) Turkey continues to amass troops at the border and wants Iraq and the Coalition troops to handle the matter on the Iraqi side.

    Police in Karbala raided the home of a Mahdi Army leader where they shot his two infant daughters and wounded two women. The man was not at home at the time. Residents of Karbala are also reporting that police have killed several other people during various raids that began on Monday. Also, three gunmen were arrested at a bomb factory.

    In Basra, gunmen clashed with Iraqi security forces, but the number of casualties is unknown. The fighting apparently began after the death of a Mahdi Army leader at a checkpoint. News reports rarely come out of Basra, even more so since British forces abandoned the volatile city. Also, a morter shell fell on a home in central Basra, killing a woman and injuring three children.

    Local police in Samarra reported that as many as 16 people people were killed and 14 more were wounded during a U.S. military air strike. U.S. troops said they noticed gunmen planting a roadside bomb and attacked them as the fled; however, the U.S. military admits that at least six of the 11 killed were civilians, including children. Residents say that the "gunmen" were actually farmers irrigating their fields.

    In Baghdad, one gunman was killed and five were wounded during an air strike in a northern neighborhood. In the Zayouna district, two people were wounded during a roadside bombing. A roadside bomb in Zaafaraniyah wounded a policeman. During an attack at the al-Mamoun school in western Baghdad, two policemen and two gunmen were killed; another gunman was wounded. Also, four dumped bodies were found.

    A roadside bomb blasted a minibus on a highway near Baquba. Three people were killed and 10 others were wounded. Many of the victims were women. Two people were shot and killed in a central district. Also, a body was found.

    Police near Fallujah found 15 bodies in an abandoned building. The victims had been shot, bound, and blindfolded.

    South of Mosul in the village of al-Qiyara, a civilian was killed when a bomb was detonated inside his home. No family members were wounded.

    Police near Amara defused four bombs.

    In Mosul, gunmen killed a civilian in the al-Nour neighborhood. Nearby, police found the body of a blacksmith who had been kidnapped in al-Zahraa. Random gunfire also killed a woman and a child in separate incidents in western Mosul. Also, a bomb factory was found in Karama.

    Gunmen kidnapped an engineer in Tikrit.

    Near Kirkuk, a man was injured in a roadside bomb attack. Foreign security personnel shot and wounded a young man, who lost his eye in the incident. Also, the body of a member of the Kurdish security force Asayish was found shot to death inside his car.

    In Kirkuk, two people were hurt when they opened a gift containing a bomb.

    A landmine killed a shepherd in al-Jadaida.

    Two people, including one policeman, were gunned down in Muqdadiyah.

    U.S. forced killed one suspect and arrested 10 more during operations in several cities. Joint U.S.-Iraqi forces detained 21 suspects near Kirkuk. Also, two PKK rebels were arrested trying to enter Turkey at the Khabor crossing.

    Wednesday: 2 GIs, 46 Iraqis Killed; 61 Iraqis Wounded; Turks Kill 34 PKK Rebels in Iraq


    At least 46 Iraqis were killed and 61 were wounded in the latest violence. Also, 34 PKK rebels were killed when Turkish forces crossed the border into northern Iraq. Two American servicemembers were killed in separate incidents.

    During a mine explosion in Salah ad Din province, one MND-North soldier was killed and three were wounded. One MNC-I soldier was killed and five more were wounded during operations near Baiji.

    Turkey began flying sorties and delivering troops inside Iraq. At least 34 Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) rebels were reported killed in the raids. There are also reports of shelling in the area. At least one village near Dahuk was heavily bombed.

    In Baghdad, simultaneous roadside bombs killed at least nine people and wounded 25 more outside a mosque in the Jisr Diyala area. In Qadissiya, a bomb targeting a commando patrol left three wounded. A mortar shell in Zayouna wounded two people. A bomb in Amiriya wounded one person. Six dumped bodies were recovered.

    Also in the capital, the Sunni Accordance Front (IAF), a political party which holds 44 parliamentary seats, reported that Iraqi army troops raided their office in al-Adl. Three guards were wounded during the incident, which is not the first of its kind involving army troops. The IAF had been threatened in the past.

    A landmine in Basra killed two electrical workers and five policemen.

    In Iskandariya, a girl was killed during random gunfire.

    A body bearing gunshot and torture marks was found in Mahaweel.

    Iraqi soldiers reportedly shot two girls dead and beat up their mother in Karbala.

    Shelling in Hib Hib killed three people and wounded 24 others.

    In Kirkuk, a IED wounded two security guards.

    Gunmen killed a man and his two sons at their home in Zaghanya.

    During a firefight between gunmen and police in Hilla, a child and two adults were killed.

    Echo Base in Diwaniya was once again attacked with Katyusha rockets; no casualties were reported. Two trucks carrying what is believed to be smuggled petrol products were seized. Also, police raided the home of an al-Sadr movement member and arrested him.

    U.S. Forces detained 21 gunmen in central and northern Iraq, while Iraqi forces killed five suspects and arrested 48 more. Joint forces arrested another 11 in Iskandariya. In Tal Afar, two suspects were arrested.

    At least 65 Iraqis were killed and 30 more were wounded in the latest violence. Tensions also continue at the Turkish border. And, the Sadrist bloc urged Mahdi Army members throughout the country to give up their arms.

    Turkish troops clashed with Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) rebels in southeastern Turkey. One Turkish soldier was wounded. The rebels reportedly withdrew into Iraq taking their dead and wounded with them.

    In Baghdad, a Sunni schoolteacher was shot to death. Also, five dumped bodies were recovered.

    Eight dumped bodies were found in Baquba. Mortars in the al-Ujeimi area destroyed a home and killed four children. Also, seven people were killed and 26 others were injured in separate attacks.

    Shelling in Khalis left two women and two children dead.

    In Mosul, gunmen killed a civilian in the al-Tank neighborhood. In al-Mithaq, a roadside bomb killed one person. Also, two bodies were found in western Mosul.

    A child was killed in Kufa when police shot at a car refusing to stop at a checkpoint.

    In Mahaweel, a roadside bomb killed a motorist, and a body was discovered.

    A man was killed and another wounded during an armed attack in a village near Suwayra.

    A man was wounded during a mortar attack in Iskandariya. At least two other people were injured by mortars also.

    Four men were arrested as they were trying to plant a roadside bomb near Karbala.

    In Diwaniya, arrest warrants were issued for 50 policemen, including officers, suspected of having links to "terrorist activities."

    Thousands of people in Missan province took to the streets demanding better protection for all Iraqis but particularly those in Sadr City, Karbala and Diwaniya.

    One person was killed during a roadside bombing in Hilla.

    At least 20 bodies were recovered from unspecified locations throughout Iraq.

    U.S. forces killed three suspects during operation in central Iraq, while Iraqi soldiers killed three and arrested 65 others in unspecified locations. Iraqi police arrested nine suspects in Hawija. One Iraqi soldier was killed during security operations.

    At least 48 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 29 others were wounded in the latest attacks, while two American servicemembers were killed and seven more GIs were wounded in separate incidents. The U.S. Consulate in Hilla came under a mortar attack as well.

    The DOD reported than an American soldier was killed in Baiji during combat operations. An IED killed one MND-B soldier and wounded four others in the capital. Also, another three GIs were wounded during a bombing in Khalidiya.

    An aide to Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr warned that the cleric could end a cease-fire if U.S. and Iraqi troops do not quit harassing his followers. The cease-fire is credited for a drop in the number of unidentified bodies found dumped throughout Iraq. Also, aid groups are reporting that the Iraqi army might be torturing children in their custody.

    Five bodies were discovered in Mosul. Iraqi soldiers killed two men who refused to stop at a checkpoint. A car bomb attack left no casualties. Also, six gunmen were killed yesterday during clashes with Iraqi soldiers.

    A suicide bomber detonated his explosives near the offices of the 1920s Revolution Brigades in Muqdadiyah. A female passerby was killed and three other pedestrians were wounded. A Brigade member was also hurt in the blast. In a separate incident near town, two people were kille in a mortar attack.

    Near Diwaniya in the town of Dagghara, a roadside bomb killed two policemen and wounded three others.

    Near Buhriz, a bomb killed a farmer and wounded three others.

    Mortars wounded four people in central Hilla. The U.S. consulate and a police barracks were among the targets.

    Mortars in Khalis left four wounded. Also, police and tribesmen repelled an attack by suspected al-Qaeda linked operatives.

    Three policemen were wounded during a roadside bombing at the Shemit Bridge in al-Zab.

    A policeman was wounded during an armed attack in Bani Saad.

    Gunmen killed a nurse outside the major hospital in Hawija.

    Two bodies bearing blindfolds, handcuffs and gunshot wounds were found in Latifiya.

    U.S. forces killed seven suspects and arrested 31 during operations in central and northern Iraq. Coalition forces killed another six and detained 22 others.

    Also, Turkey continues to attack PKK positions and ready for a major incursion into northern Iraq, while Iraq, the U.S. and others push for a diplomatic resolution. Meanwhile, residents of northern Iraq are leaving their villages in fear of a possible invasion. Millions of Iraqis have already been displaced by violence in other regions.

    Saturday: 1 GI, 68 Iraqis Killed, 38 Wounded; over 100 Iraqi Troops Poisoned


    As protesters in the U.S. called for an end to the war, at least 68 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 38 more were wounded in the latest round of violence. One U.S. servicemember was also killed in Salah ad Din province. Eight people, including a police chief, were kidnapped in Muqdadiya. Also, 100 Iraqi army servicemembers were poisoned during breakfast in Baghdad.

    Police found 17 decomposing corpses in a field west of Baquba.

    In Baghdad, eight people were killed and 13 more were wounded during a bombing in the Jisr Diyala area. Four unidentified bodies were found dumped in as many locations. Also, over 100 Iraqi troops were poisoned during breakfast this morning; the origin of the poisoning is unknown.

    During clashes between the Islamic State in Iraq and security forces near Samarra, 13 Iraqi and three foreign fighters were killed.

    A roadside bomb between Iskandariya and Asiriya left one policeman dead and six others wounded.

    In Kirkuk, a roadside bomb killed one policeman and injured five others. Last night, one policeman was killed and three others were injured by a roadside bomb downtown; a half hour later, another bomb injured four policemen and a civlilian.

    A police chief and seven bodyguards were kidnapped from an army checkpoint in Muqdadiya. Thirteen people were later arrested at the checkpoint, but the chief has not been heard from. In a separate incident yesterday, when a citizen's group entered a residence, an occupant detonated a suicide bomb killing himself; another gunman and one of the members of the citzen's group were wounded.

    In Khalis, a Sunni cleric and imam was gunned down.

    Two policemen were killed in Zanbour village. When first responders arrived, gunmen attacked them, killing two more policemen.

    Two bodies were found in the Tigris River in Suwayra.

    In Kut, gunmen shot and killed a policeman.

    In Diyala province, two people were killed in a roadside bombing and three more were killed during shelling.

    A body was found inside an abandoned car in Riyadh.

    In Mosul, gunmen first assassinated a member of the Iraqi Islamic Party and then killed three people trying to retrieve the body. Also, the provincial governor escaped an assassination attempt unharmed.

    Shelling in al-Dulab left two dead.

    In Balad Ruz, a policeman was critically wounded during an armed attack.

    During a raid north of Baghdad, U.S. troops killed two gunmen during an operation focused on the capture of a rogue militia leader. Fifteen gunmen were detained.

    Nine suspects were arrested in northern Babel, while seven were detained in southern Baghdad and nine more were captured in Karbala.

    Also, Turkey resumed minor operations against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) after talks failed. Meanwhile, the president of the Kurd region of Iraq reiterated that they will not be involved in an all-out war between the PKK and Turkey.

    Sunday: 43 Iraqis Killed, 61 Wounded


    At least 43 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 61 more were wounded; another 13 people were kidnapped in separate incidents. No Coalition soldiers were reported killed. Also, Turkish troops reported killing 20 PKK fighters on their side of the border.

    In Baghdad, six dumped bodies were recovered. Two people were killed and 13 more were wounded during a bombing in Kadhimiyah. Ten tribal chiefs, who belong to the Diyala Salvation Council, were kidnapped in the al-Shabb area; the body of one of them has already been found. Also, five people were injured during a car bombing in the Hurriya neighborhood.

    A large suicide bombing rocked Kirkuk, killing eight people and wounding 28 more. In a separate incident, gunmen injured a police officer and his bodyguard. Also, an Iraqi Turkman, who is a journalist, was kidnapped.

    Gunmen killed a Sunni Iraqi Islamic Party member and left two others critically injured in Basra; two others were kidnapped. In a separate incident, security forces randomly fired upon a demonstration and injured six graduates from an oil-training institute. Also, an election official was killed last night.

    One person was killed and three others were wounded during an IED attack in Baquba. Also, a mass grave containing 15, mostly female, bodies was discovered.


    In Mosul, gunmen wounded a sports director and his driver during an armed attack. A recently retired brigadier-general was killed in a drive-by shooting.

    A policeman was gunned down in Hawija.

    Gunmen killed a policeman and a woman in separate incidents in Kut.

    A bullet-riddled body was found near the Tigris River in Suwayra.

    U.S and Iraqi forces killed two gunmen in Mosul, while U.S. forces arrested six suspects in other locations. Iraqi police detained five people in Iskandariya.

    Karbala has implemented a number of security measures to ensure the peaceful handover of control of the province to the Iraqis from U.S. forces. Twenty-four people have been detained in the city so far, and one hostage was freed.

    Meanwhile, Turkish troops killed 20 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels in southeastern Turkey.

    Also, officials are discounting recent reports concerning the kidnapping of a police chief.

    Monday: 87 Iraqis Killed, 61 Wounded


    Among the latest incidents in Iraq, a suicide bomber killed and wounded dozens of police recruits in Baquba. Another bombing left over 20 dead and injured in Siniya. Overall, at least 87 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 61 more were wounded. No Coalition troops were reported killed.

    A U.S. general was injured along with another GI during a roadside bombing in Baghdad.

    Nine of 10 tribal chiefs who were kidnapped yesterday in Baghdad were freed today during a military operation; the tenth sheikh had been killed shortly after the abduction. Four of the kidnappers were killed.

    A suicide bomber riding a bicycle attacked a police base in Baquba where he killed 30 policemen and wounded 25 others; at least one woman and one child were among the injured. Twenty dumped and beheaded bodies were found near a police station west of the city. Also, a university professor was kidnapped.

    In Tikrit, a pair of U.S. air strikes in separate districts killed two people and wounded 10 more, including women and children. One of the strikes may have targeted a children's playground.

    In Baghdad, four unidentified bodies were recovered today. A street sweeper was killed and a second was wounded during an armed attack in Mansour. In Bayaa, one person was killed and six were wounded when a car bomb exploded at a bus terminal. Three people were wounded during an explosion in Karada. Also, 16 gunmen were arrested throughout the city.

    A car bomb near Baiji in the town of Siniya left eight dead and 13 wounded.

    Gunmen in Mosul stormed a home, where they killed four people and wounded another person, all from the same family; three women were among the dead. An Iraqi soldier was killed in a western district. A housewife was killed in al-Wehda, while a civilian was gunned down in al-Jazaer. Also, a policewoman and a civilian were killed in separate incidents elsewhere.

    Security forces in Amiriyat al-Fallujah arrested two men involved in the shooting death of a police officer.

    No casualties were reported during a Katyusha rocket attack on the British base in Basra. Also, one Iraqi soldier was killed and 12 were injured during a vehicular accident.

    A university professor was assassinated in Najaf. Also, a captain from the police commandos was killed in a separate event.

    The body of a woman, who had been shot to death, was found in Kut.

    In Arbil, an Iraqi smuggler was killed.

    A civilian was killed in Kirkuk.

    An improvised bomb in Barima village killed a woman, while injuring her husband and daughter.

    In Turkey, at least two Turkish soldiers were killed as the country continues to threaten the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Near the border, Turkish troops have surrounded a group of PKK rebels based in the Turkish mountainside.

    Tuesday: 3 GIs, 31 Iraqis Killed; 31 Iraqis Wounded


    Baghdad took the brunt of today’s violence with a number of bombings occurring throughout the city. Overall, 31 Iraqis were killed and 31 more were injured there and in other parts of Iraq. Three MND-C soldiers were killed during an IED attack southeast of the capital as well. Also, the Iraqi cabinet drafted a law that would end immunity from prosecution for foreign security contractors.

    The deputy governor in Basra admitted that the security situation in the city is out of control. News reports out of the city have been scant for months, especially since the British were forced to pull out of the city, so the extent of the violence there is unknown.

    In Baghdad, five unidentified bodies were discovered. Mortars wounded two people in the Mansour district. In Zayouna, a gunman lobbed a grenade at a group of street sweepers, killing one and injuring six others. A bomb planted in a minibus killed one person and wounded four in central Baghdad’s Allawi bus terminal. A bomb on a minibus in eastern Baghdad wounded two people. The editor of a new weekly was murdered over the weekend. Also, two gunmen were wounded at an Iraqi checkpoint, and a young female hostage was freed after being found hidden in the trunk of their car.

    U.S. forces fired upon a car in Kut, killing one civilian and injuring a second passenger. The reasons for the attack are unknown.

    The body of an elderly farmer was found near al-Shahimiya a day after he was kidnapped.

    Four policemen were killed and eight others were wounded during a car bombing in Samarra.

    Four bodies were discovered in and near Mosul. Also, an electrical employee was gunned down, while a fifth body was found.

    In Kirkuk, a body bearing the usual gunshot and torture marks was found. An off-duty policeman was killed in a drive-by shooting.

    Gunmen killed a police lieutenant yesterday in Najaf. The body of a second policeman was found in the al-Jamiya neighborhood.

    Near Tikrit, mortars killed a woman and wounded five others.

    U.S. forces killed four suspects and detained 17 during operation over the last two days in central and northern Iraq. Two suspects were killed and seven more were arrested during joint operation in Baquba. In Hawija, 27 suspects were detained.

    In Turkey, three soldiers and six Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels are reported dead from continued fighting. The Turkish government is also weighing its option concerning an economic attack. Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region is heavily reliant on power and commodities coming from Turkey.

    Wednesday: 94 Iraqis Killed, 20 Wounded


    At least 94 Iraqis were killed and 20 others were wounded during a mostly quiet Wednesday. Many of the dead were killed during security raids. No Coalition troops were reported killed.

    In Basra, the British confirmed that the handover of security operations to the Iraqis will be completed by December. Troops have removed themselves from most of Basra already, even though they admit that the level of violence is unacceptable.

    U.S. forces killed three Iraqi police officers and injured a fourth in Salman Pak during yet another air strike gone awry. The incident happend when helicopter were called into to support a joint U.S.-Iraqi operation that had received small arms fire.

    In Baghdad, six unidentified bodies were found dumped mostly in western neighborhoods. A car bomb killed one person and wounded three others in the Allawi district; a bombing occurred there yesterday as well.

    In Mosul, gunmen killed a civilian in the Muthanna area. In Arabi, a bomb wounded a civilian. Also, eight bodies, including those belonging to three policemen, were found shot and burned in two neighborhoods.

    Gunmen attempted to assassinate a judge in Kirkuk; one bodyguard was killed and a second one was wounded. During a separate shooting, an intelligence officer, his wife, and his son were wounded. Three family members were killed in a U.S. raid on their home. Also, a man and his two children were wounded during a drive-by shooting yesterday.

    On a highway between Kirkuk and Mosul, a tribal leader was killed and three companions were wounded during an armed attack. The tribal leader is involved with fighting against al-Qaeda.

    A policeman and an off-duty soldier were killed and a civilian was wounded during a roadside bombing in Tuz Khormato.

    A roadside bomb in al-Azim killed two policemen and injured a third one.

    No casualties were reported during an assassination attempt on the mayor of al-Ratba.

    A decayed body bearing gunshot wounds was found in Diwaniya.

    Gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Yaiji, killing a policemen and injuring two others.

    A policeman was wounded during a shooting in Iskandariyah.

    U.S. forces killed three suspects in Kirkuk and 10 others in different parts of Iraq; another 44 were detained. Also, a U.S. soldier was wounded during a security operation. Also, a total of 51 suspects were killed in Baghdad last week.

    The police chief in Balad Ruz escaped a roadside bomb attack unharmed, but six guards were killed and eight more were wounded. Two more policemen were killed and two others were wounded during a separate bombing targeting police forces.

    At least 21 Iraqis were killed and nine more were wounded during light violence. Near the Balad air base, three U.S. airmen were killed during combat operations. Also, one Polish soldier was killed and three more were injured when a landmine blasted their vehicle.

    According to the Interior Ministry at least 887 Iraqis were killed during October; however, the Health Ministry placed the number of dead unofficially at 1448 Iraqis. These figures include civilians, police and soldiers. The Interior Ministry's death count is slightly higher than the September figures but significantly lower than the previous month’s. In Basra alone, 40 dumped bodies and 27 murders were counted in October; these deaths were not reported in the Western media outlets.

    An explosion in Ramadi wounded three people.

    Near Tuz Khormato, gunmen killed one student and wounded another.

    No casualties were reported after gunmen bombed a bridge linking Udhaim and Baquba.

    U.S. forces killed 10 suspects in unspecified locations in Salman Pak.

    In Baghdad, two bodies were found in Amil and Jihad, while a third body was found in Sadr City. Mortars in Binoog resulted in no casualties. No casualties were reported during two roadside bombings in Doura.

    Two gunmen were killed in Rutba while a third was killed just outside town.

    In Basra, hundreds of Sadrists staged a massive protest calling for an end to arrests and harassment.

    Two dumped bodies were found in Mosul. Also, gunmen killed one person and wounded five others.

    At least one other body belonging to a victim of sectarian violence was found in an unspecified city.

    Police released 197 people from several jails after charges against them were dropped due to lack of evidence.

    Also, the Iraqi Ministry of Displacement and Migration announced that very few Iraqis were displaced over the last three months. In Diyala, 53 displaced families returned home.
