    CONSTRUCTING FEAR

    Australia’s Secret Industrial Inquisition

Constructing Fear tells the story of Australia’s little known industrial watchdog, the $150 million dollar Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC). The ABCC, created following the Cole Royal Commission to put a halt to alleged ‘unlawful practices’ on building sites, has far-reaching powers that strip building workers of basic rights and has had a disastrous impact on the safety and conditions of ordinary Australian men and women.

Constructing Fear is a compelling film that tells the first hand stories of the workers who have been singled out, stripped of their rights and intimidated, and the bravery of those who dared to fight back. Workers like the 107 Perth construction workers now facing individual fines of $28,600 each after a strike over the sacking of a safety delegate and Brodene, a crane driver and single mother of three children, who was threatened with jail after a stopwork meeting following a ‘near-miss’ accident with a train on a level-crossing.

    Premiere - Constructing Fear

    When: 5pm, Friday 31st August

Where: Guthrie Theatre, University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in the Design Building (Building 6) Harris Street, Ultimo (near the ABC and the overhead footbridge)

The film premiere is followed at 6:30pm by the opening of the alternate forum to APEC. The forum will focus on people’s rights and workers rights. Speakers include Sharan Burrow, ACTU and ITUC President, Yuri Munsayac, from Asia Partnership for Human Development, and Don Henry, Executive Director of the Australian Conservation Foundation.

The alternate APEC conference is at the same venue on Saturday September 1, from 9.30am – 4.00pm, with panels and workshops, including some documentary screenings. Keynote speakers include: Prof Jane Kelsey from the University of Auckland and Action Resource Education Network of Aotearoa (ARENA), John Sutton, National Secretary CFMEU, and Elmer Labog, Chairperson of the KMU Labor Centre Philippines.

    I just watched this BD!

You can download this film for free!

And yeah, the ABCC are fucks - they can actually multiply fines up to 10 times. Basically the only time you can strike (protected) is where the agreement has passed the NED (Nominal Expiry Date); where the bargaining period has begun. And still then there are very rigid limits on what you can and cannot do.

Grgghh I was going to post more but the librarian hijacked my computer.

Anywhoms, the strikes also have to be related to the actual industry; solidarity strikes aren't allowed. Also the Minister of I.R has the power to break strikes. Oh and you have to belong to a union which relates to your job; I think that's why there are two CFMEU's now. :/

It will be interesting to see what happens now that the new IR bill is in parliament.

I thought it was an interesting documentary, and you get to see where I live - and I saw some cats that I know! :P

    Jesus, planning this one early!
"The sun shines. To hell with everything else!" - Stephen Fry

"As the world of the spectacle extends its reign it approaches the climax of its offensive, provoking new resistances everywhere. These resistances are very little known precisely because the reigning spectacle is designed to present an omnipresent hypnotic image of unanimous submission. But they do exist and are spreading.", The Bad Days Will End.

"(The) working class exists and struggles in all countries, and has the same enemies in all countries – the police, the army, the unions, nationalism, and the fake ‘socialism’ of the bourgeois left. It shows that the conditions for a worldwide revolution are ripening everywhere today. It shows that workers and revolutionaries are not passive spectators of inter-imperialist conflicts: they have a camp to choose, the camp of the proletarian struggle against all the factions of the bourgeoisie and all imperialisms." -ICC, Nation or Class?
