Muere lentamente quien no viaja,
quien no lee,
quien no escucha música,
quien no halla encanto en sà mismo.
Muere lentamente
quien destruye su amor propio;
quien no se deja ayudar.

Dear Colleague,
We at the American Association for Cancer Research share your concerns about allegations of unethical medical conduct and racial slurs against the people of Puerto Rican in the 1930s by Dr. Cornelius Rhoads.
As such, we have taken the following actions:
First, we have suspended the issuance of the 2003 AACR-Cornelius Rhoads Memorial Award. That award was established in 1979 to give recognition to young investigators, no more than 40 years old, with "meritorious achievement in cancer research."
Second, we have initiated an independent investigation to determine if the accusations against Dr. Rhoads, who died in 1959, are true. Dr. Jay Katz, an authority on bioethics and human experimentation, has agreed to find out what happened. Dr. Katz is the Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor Emeritus of Law, Medicine and Psychiatry and the Harvey L. Karp Professional Lecturer in Law and Psychoanalysis at the Yale Law School. Dr. Katz received a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont and a medical degree from Harvard University.
Dr. Katz is eminently qualified to direct this investigation, and we ask everyone to remain patient and open-minded as we proceed. The AACR board will release a statement about the investigation once it has been completed.
Every individual ? even if he or she is deceased? deserves due process. We need to determine the truth before reaching a final conclusion about the award the carries Dr. Rhoads' name.
Best wishes,
