How would history be different had we not dropped the bomb? Did it really save lives in the long run? Did we do it to keep the Soviets out of Japan? Was it a warning to the Soviets? Would we have dropped it on Germany? Thoughts?
Captain Blackadder: You see, Baldrick, in order to prevent war two great super-armies developed. Us, the Russians and the French on one side, Germany and Austro-Hungary on the other. The idea being that each army would act as the other's deterrent. That way, there could never be a war.
Private Baldrick: Except, this is sort of a war, isn't it?
Captain Blackadder: That's right. There was one tiny flaw in the plan.
Lieutenant George: O, what was that?
Captain Blackadder: It was bollocks.
Well I believe that the bomb did save lifes in the long run. It would have been very difficult to bring the japanese to a surrender otherwise, they were very determined.
actually the Japanese did try to start talks of conditional surrender, but the US wanted uncontidional surrender.
I\'m ready for whatever they bring. I\'ll go against a tank with a shank for my dreams, and thats my fucking word. - Dead Prez
It could have been like Korea, a North (Russia) and the South (US). Or the US would have held out for a while and wait for Japan to finally surrender. I would choose any other way than using the god damn bomb.
If the bomb wasn't dropped how do you think it would
have affected the Cold War?
you know ive been meaning to learn m0re about this. US bombing japan (or what ever happened).
can anyone tell me a short summary.

The war could be over 2 weeks ago but the americans wanted to test there atombom. It was just finishd but noth testet and so they want to test on Japan. They didn't know it would have so much concecunses and that it would kill so many people.

Lets try to keep our discussions to the facts instead of spouting wild conspiracy theories. I am just as against the U.S as the next guy, but the idea that they used the bomb "just to test it out" is laughable.
The Japans did want to surrender, but their "conidtional surrender" was basically this, we stop fighting, you guys impose no sanctions, and we walk our seperate ways. Now call me crazy, I wouldn't have accepted that deal either. The bomb was dropped because the Japanese would rather fight TO THE DEATH than surrender. I'm not saying it wasn't horrible, it was, but I think it was neccesary. They should've dropped one on Berlin.
The dropping of the atomic bomb was one of the worst atrocities committed in history. Not only did hundreds of thousands die from the initial blast, but even a greater number suffered years later from radiation poisoning. Let's also remember that it was not one, but two of these bombs that were dropped.
Aside from terrible loss of life and human suffering, dropping the bombs transformed world politics. It created a world where foreign policy of the major powers is run by fear and paranoia. Not that we didn't have this before 1945, but dropping the bomb shocked the world and added even more tension, especially between the US and the USSR. An immense waste of resources would now go forward to building nuclear weapons, and at the peak of cold war, the US had nearly 38,000 nukes and the USSR 40,000. (If you want to check this, go to Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.)
It is true that the Japanese did offer conditional surrender before the bombs were dropped, and that this fact was hidden from the public at that time. It is also true the bomb was dropped 2 days before the Russians would have joined the attack on Japan, April 8. This is because one of the reasons we dropped the bomb (I'm not saying it's the main reason, but definitlely a significant one) was to impress and intimidate the USSR, with this tremendous show of might. Furthermore, so much money and effort was put into making it, we just "had" to use it... else it would be a waste.
I still believe there were other ways around dropping the bomb, including accepting the surrender. But it's not really an important subject to debate. It's already happened, it's overwith.

No, the Japanese did want to surrender, but the US was eagered to test the bomb about which the scientists had been talking as the "wonderbomb" and which had consted a lot of effort and money to produce.
Let no one charge that socialists have arrayed class against class in this struggle. That has been done long since in the evolution of capitalist society. One class is small and rich and the other large and poor....One consists of capitalists and the other of workers. These two classes are at war. Every day of peace is at the expense of labor. There can be no peace and good will between these two essentially antagonistic economic classes. - Debs
