I've heard a lot of people, stuff in movies and tv, and all that say that.... "We fought in Nam so YOU(teenagers) can have freedom"

I personally dont' get what the hell that means. They fought in Nam...hundreds of miles from here. Okay, wow you guys fought, bravo...but wait you LOST. SO? Freedom? Would I not be free if they hadn't won...no wait they LOST. So, what are they trying to say?

Ignore it. According to them, this "war on terror" is for our freedom too.

In one sense, by fighting a conflict that was fraught with military and political flaws, and doomed to failure and much loss of life, Vietnam Vets did fight so that the future generations could be free. Free from politicians making such stupid decisions. Free from the population accepting blindly that the government must be doing the right thing.

So far it has held fairly true but watch out for Iraq........and Afghanistan is not over yet.......

They also fought for the freedom of future Yanks in another way. The Domino theory was widely believed to be likely to occur if Vietnam fell to the "left wing Communist scum" (I love that saying), and if this happened then US corpotations would have lost a lot of slaves in Asia, which would have led to the accelerated rate of growth of fascism in the US. So fighting in Vietnam halted fascism until Dubya took the throne.

Does this sound plausible or am I just pulling it all from my arse?

that's a crock of shit. it was a war to stop those horrible horrible evil commie pinko bastards at all costs. America simply tried to do whatever it could to prevent communism, despite the fact that it may actually be a good thing *gasp

I think they say it to deflect what a major military fuck up it was in drafting American kids to fight in an unpopular foreign civil war. It cost a lot of young lives that didn't want to be there and didn't support it.
Robert McNamara, US secretary of defense during the Vietnam war pretty much denounced the US's participation in the war a few years back and wrote a few books analyzing it. Due to his poor military strategies, the Viet Cong were victorious!

Here are some stats on war casualties.

To stop the threat of a good example.

Nothing but the murder of 2 million people in Indochina and 58,000 American deaths came out of the Vietnam conflict. The one action that ultimately ended the war was the release of the Pentagon Papers.
