Zapatista is not a person. Emiliano Zapata was a mexican revolutionary who wanted to liberate the peasants. Zapatista is the name of the movement that is inspired by Zapata's ideas. I guess that it's the right definition.

Zapata was the man who took southern Mexico by storm, he took control of all the lands that were owned by rich cattle ranchers and gave it to the landless peasants (mostly the indian poor). This didnt become official until the Gov. signed "EL PLAN DE AYALA" which was introduced by Zapata himself, stating that all land formally owned by the ranchers was to be converted to communal land for farming to be owned, not by one person, but a community! This was Zapata. The Zapatistas were his soldiers, his followers who fought for Zapata’s ideals, just like Pancho Villas followers were Villistas! Have you been informed about the EZLN??? They are the modern day Zapatistas, with the same goals and ambitions.

I gave him links to a few short biographies about the Zapatista's and Zapata which I hope he finds helpful.
There were two “Reigns of Terror,†if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors†of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror... --- Mark Twain

The Zapatistas are the great thing to happen in México in a while. I believe they should of taken over El Zocalo' in 2001 and not leave. We could've see if Vicente Fox's gov't is truly democratic and wouldn't comit another 1968 massacre.

Well, I've started reading about it probably only 3 or 4 months ago. I have seen many Che Guevara shirts in Korea, and so I went home one day started reading about it. Reading all the stuff on Che Guevara also opened up sites to anti-american things and socialism/communism. Communism appeals to me because I don't believe that people should get rich off of exploitation, opression. Also, I don't think its fair that some people are rich because of heirs, or just money passed down...I don't think its fair that some people are poor because they are born into a poor family. Frankly I am just a kid living a bourgeois lifestyle, but also I would be willing to give it up for equality. As many people have argued that poor people are born into a poor family, its not their fault...well I was born into a richer family (but my grandfather started off poor, and made a small chicken shop in the early 60s or 70s. Now he is one of the richest people in Korea. And I know I will be attacked for this).

Yeah, I ask a lot of questions...but hey it makes me GET knowledge of theory and history.

Hey, and sorry if I bothered you by posting a bunch of threads on questions. But you've answered a lot of them, so thanks. Now on, I'll read more and then ask, because most of the time I ask and then I read about it. So I already know what happened before people answer.

ZaPaTiStA SoCiAlIsTa: i thought that zapata gave back the land to the peasants . that was before diaz made his liberal laws of haciendas which zapata didnt like. the haciendas took their land from the peasants then zapata revolted and when he took control of Morelos he told the peasants to take their land back, later he said that the land should be own by the villages.

can I also add that communism is not only about MONEY. I myself am all for human rights ! I dont believe in labeling myself anything, but my thoughts and ideology have been influenced by The Great Karl Marx with the help of Engel. I have never adapted to any religons. Comradejunichi I encourage you to read this book "Dialectical materialism" by V.G.Afanasyev you might want to start with some easy reading first, because that book is the foundation of all of this ! its written like calculus.
I dont mean to disrespect you in any way, but I just wanted to share that with you. I think it is great that you started of with El che. as much as I adore the man, I also disagree with guerillas tactics. But he had to do what he had to do, times have changed so much that its hard to see a successful revolution. anyhow as for now have a beautiful day.

thank you. I'll like to add, Zapata used feudalism. Feudalism was created before capitalism, and it has alot of blood and killing involved so its not civilized really. However to get to socialism we need to go thorugh capitalism then as technology gets advanced and we no longer need human labour to survive thats when a REAL socialist systems comes in. What surprised The USSR was the fact that China went from feudalism directly to communism. The country itself is strong, however the people are poor. So that not a good thing. Like Marx said himself we have to go through stages before we get where we want to be. (something like that).
So honestly (once again) no disrespect towards anybodies beliefs but che and zapata werent too different, you cant force nor change a country totally without some crucial conflicts. I adore the man though (che), I just didnt adore the killings.

yes, like I said Russia was surprised. Meaning: Russia was industrial, before it turned to communism (originated from marxism). But was at the same time not advanced enough, since marxism wont completely work if human labor is still needed to run this world. We have a long way for a successful socialist world
    I hope I'm not dreaming !
