Ah, excellent. on eof the many examples of imperialism and manefest destiny at work, comrade.

James K. Polk wanted land from mexico. When it wasnt sold to him he sent troops either into mexican territory or on the border of mexico(much larger than it is now). When his troops were attacked, he said "american blood has been shed on american soil". Afterwards, they stole all of mexicos power in the Mexican war.

When his troops were attacked, he said "american blood has been shed on american soil".
so by saying that, he made it seem as if we were just there, and we were attacked. . . and thus gaining the american interest because we had shed american blood on american soil.

Going a bit off track here but one of the reasons the US entered the first world war was because Germany tried to persuade Mexico to ally with them agains the US.

what I want to know is why Mexico didn't seize some of its land back during the U.S. Civil War about ten years after the Mexican-American War.

Today, there are many Mexicans who want "their land" back, after over 150 years after the war that gave it into USA hands. To me, that's ignorance. There's no way Mxico, either through diplomatic or warful ways, will ever get that land back.

Also, the residents of those lands would probably be furious, because their standard of living would sure decrease. The Mexican immigrants wouldn't be pleased either, when they risked it all to come into the USA and only have them return back to Mxico without moving their legs, lol.

It's patriotic for many Mexicans to want "their land" back, but under the current circumstances, it'll never happen.

you're right Borincano, but of course it makes perfect sense for Jewish people to get their land back after....how many years?
Those American shouldn't have been there, "manifest destiny"/"let's take over the world" is NOT something which would make me proud of my country, i can't believe some of those idiots.

There were some Irish troops in the US army and they went over to the Mexican side, they were known as the San Patricios Battalion. They left due to the shitty conditions they suffered in the so called 'land of opportunity'...

well from waht i learned at school the US thought it was their destiny to own all from the atlantic to the pacific. the gringos were insiperd by a speech in 1846 by mafor augeste davezac

"Land enought-land enough! make way i say, for the young american buffalo-he has not yet got land enouh; he wants more landas his cool shelter in summer- he wants more land for his beutiful pature grounds (which we work in by he way ) i tell ou, we will give him oregon for his summer shade, and the region of texas as his winter pasture. [applause] like all of his race he wants salt too. well he shall have the use of two oceans, the mighty pacific and the turbulent atlantic shal be is. he shall not stop his career until he slakes his thirst in the frozen ocean."

thats what he wrote. and thus began the "manifest destiny" an idea that the US had the right to take all of north america. some people said amercans had the duty to extend white american culture, like democratic gov. christianity and economic growth (chicken pox )
from this the idea came that the white american culture was superior to all other.

the whites settled in the fronteir along the mississippi river. spain began to fera for its northenr lands. so they agreed to a proposal made by a missourian named moses austin he anted to setle a limited number of US citizens in thexas. they agreed that the US settlers would be loyal to spain and accept the catholic religion.

mexico gained its independence from spain in 1821. and it took months for austin to persuade the new goverment to maintaing the grant in texas.

as more US settlers came to texas relatinos with the mexican goverment became strainged. the settlement grew faster than expected by 1830 15, whit and over 1,000 blacks lived in texas, outnumbering the mixican settlers by about four to one! in addition many of the newer settler refused to honor the original agreement. protestants were annoyed by the religious requirements. the ineficiencies of the mexican goverment and the constants qurrels between diffrent political parties . many refused to obey the mexican laws, laws like the one that abolished slavery in texas in 1824( the settlers freed their slaves and then forcedd them to sign agreements that made them slaves in all butr name) austins role also pissed the settlers accustomed to the democratic practices found in the US.

many began demanding independance. so the mexican goverment sent troops to occupy texas. also they forbade more immigration from the US but was unnable to stop them

On october 2, 1835, a group of volunteers refused an order to surender a cannon to mexican troops. this became the first step in the in a rebellion against mexico.

at first the settlers opposed not the acts of being loyal to texas, but their leader, general antonio lopez de santa ana. who was doing away with the reforms of mixicos constitution.

early in december 1835, a group of 300 texan vounteers drove 1, 100mexican troops out of san antonio.

santa ana wanted to crush the rebels and assembled an army. few texans took this threat seriously, so some 180 rebels commanded by 26-year old willliam barret travis went into the alamo. santan annas army laid sieg of the alamo. as more troops joined in travis saw the danger of his position but stood his ground and wrote "victory or death"

while this was going on a constatution was written by a group of delegates, based upin the US document.

after santa nas vicotyr at the alamo he succeeeded in defeating the texans at goliad. he order all the prisenors to be killed.

at san jacinto on april 21 1836 houston decided the texans were readyh to attack. they caught santa ana by surpirse and defeated the mexican soldiers in minutes.

santa ana was captured the next day and was forced to recognize teh indepence of texas. the mexican gov. said the treaty as worthless because it has been obtained by threat. so texas was still part of mexico, so the mexicans insisted.

the US refused to annex texas to the union, because texas was a slave state and it would not be fare cuz there were 13 slave and 13 non slave states.

so for almost 10 years texas was an independent republic. the "lone star republic" symbolizing by a single star on its flag.

1884 texas was annexed by the US. saying that it would help them in the manifest destiny. the US president james k. polk voted texas to be added to the union

james also had his eye on the mexican lands reaching from texas to the pacific ocean. so he tried to buy the land off of mexico.when diplomacy faied james sent troops to the rio grande and declared it a southern border. mexico insited that the boundary was teh nueces river, 150miles farthere north. in mexian eyes the US had commited a hostile act. it had annexed mexicn land and moved troops there.

when the two armies clashed james saw this as an excusehe proclaimed that mexicas "shed american blood on ameican soil" and so the US congress declareed war on mexico on may 13, 1846.

teh US forces were better organized and equiped. the mexicans were weakend by civil war.
santa fe, the capital of new mexico, was the first to go. in california just before war broke out, a gropu of US settlers in sonoma had seized mexican genral mariano vallejo, raised a hmemade flag shoeing a bear and a single star.

when the US navy occupied californa ports in julythe bera flaggers jined its forces.

US troops also invaded mexico south of the rio grande and won weveral victories, after two years of war teh mexican gov, concede defeat.

in feb. 1848, mexico and the US signed the treatyh of guadalupe hidalgo. uner the terms teh US would pay mexico 15 million and would assume up to 3.25 mill. in mexican debts to american citizens.

now the manifest destiny stretched from "sea to shining sea"

so there you go. the US took the land and there nuffin much we can do about it now. california was part of mexico for a little bit of time and then poof it was gone.

but would we consider the electoral college as us giving the vote? i think its more of us giving an oppinion, and the government kinda agreeing with it. we do not have 100% choice over who becomes president, and that sux!
