I heard that before the Cuban Missile Crisis, there was the Turkey Missile Crisis...Is that true? US created bases and nukes in Turkey first? Someone told me that and I was wondering where I could find out about it. Frankly, I've never heard of it.

from what my us history teacher told us one and a half years ago, their were US missles in turkey, and he emphasized this point much. he said that is one of the things most people dont know, or like to ignore. i have only read it outside of his class in one place, unfortunatley i can not remember where this was.
i also read that another reason why missles were sent into cuba was because of the US's Operation Mongoose. cuba found out about it, and thought that it would perhaps help them out a little to have the missles, yes? please, correct me if im wrong.

Turkey missile crisis? I've never heard it referred to as that, but yes, there were US missiles in Turkey before missiles were placed in Cuba.

Khrushchev wrote two letters to Kennedy, the first one proposing that the missiles in Cuba would be removed in exchange for promise that the US or its proxies wouldn't invade Cuba. The second letter proposed the missiles would be removed in exchange for removal of the US's missile facilities in Turkey. The second letter was ignored, and Kennedy accepted the first proposal.

October 28th 1962 Khrushchev announced the the missiles would be removed, trusting the US would keep their promise not to invade Cuba. Followup negotiations were made to remove soviet light bombers and set the US's assurance conditions and etc.

The missile sites in Turkey were removed later, supposedly they were old and obselete anyway...

The reason this is often ignored is probably because of the strong anti-communist sentiment in America (and many of its history books, needless to say), people would rather just call the soviets "evil" than assume that they might have had some possible sense of justification behind what happened in Cuba

i never heard anything about missiles in turkey one and a half years ago but i did learn about the "turkish missile crisis", and of course it's in very few text books because the text books can never show the U.S.'s wrong doings
