In the 1920s and 30s, leftism became very popular. However, FBI repression pretty much killed it off. Union leaders were arrested on trumped up charges and beaten, for instance.
“There are no boundaries in this struggle to the death. We cannot be indifferent to what happens anywhere in the world, for a victory by any country over imperialism is our victory; just as any country's defeat is a defeat for all of us.” – Che Guevara

“We still believe that the struggle of Ireland for freedom is a part of the world-wide upward movement of the toilers of the earth, and we still believe that the emancipation of the working class carries within it the end of all tyranny – national, political and social.” – James Connolly

Roosevelt in my opinion was a pretty decent guy. His economic policy was pretty radical for America.

In the 1920's the KKK reached its peak with over 2million members (or so they bragged)

Mazdak is right, red scare was a reactionary movement of capitalism against communism, not the progressive communist movement.
    Red Scare killed US communism.

There were a ton of great movements in the 1920's. There was the Harlem Renaissance and a great labor movement. The FBI dealt awful blows to both, but the onset of the Depression hurt them most.

There will always be a backlash on the movements when they get big enough. A truly strong movement like the 1st and 2nd wave of feminism will pull through them. But we can still be successful.

The bolshvik party lost 90% of its membership after the 1905 failed revolution. They still won the next one right?

If the backlash makes us weak, then the backlash will win, but if we fight the backlash, then we prove to be stronger that the enemy and theres no stopping us!.

I don't know much about the left in the 20's and 30's in the U$A so I won't talk about it much. I think a time when communism was close in America was during the 60's and 70's with commie's running the protests, MLK Jr doing his bit, Malcolm X advancing the leftist cause, Hippie's spouting peaceful mantras and of course, Castro admitted the Cuban Revolution was a socialist one internationally (before this time it was just a Revolution, hard to explain what I mean here, just pretend to understand me like most people do)
Anyway thats all I really have to say...

The Communist Party USA does indeed still exist (sigh!) though it's probably been 50 years or more since they had a member who was actually a communist. They have a discussion group at Yahoo.groups, if you want to check them out. Some of the other Leninist fossiles are also still around (I think)--Workers World Party, Progressive Labor Party, Socialist Workers Party, etc. You can probably find their websites without too much difficulty. Take some aspirin before you start exploring this bunch.
