Plato wrote the book "the republic" which is basically communism. There were also many ancient greek city/states that practiced socialism. Any body else know about this.

They hardly practised socialism. They had slaves, a democracy in which only men of a certain age and wealth could partake in and did not share resources and commodities. It was a primitive version of the modern political economy.

The City of Athenes (spelt wrong, probably)invented democracy though! Well i thought they did, true they had their slaves, but times were different then, and this was like a first version of democracy...i'll post more later.

I wanted to find out more, but wasn't sure of any books that i could get hold of, any one any ideas?

Private Baldrick: Except, this is sort of a war, isn't it?
Captain Blackadder: That's right. There was one tiny flaw in the plan.
Lieutenant George: O, what was that?

i have glanced through a book called Plato: Democrat of Totalitarian. its a bunch of essays on what some people (bertrand russel being the only one i can remember right now) think about Platos politics. like i said though, i have only glanced through it, and have only read some of the bertrand russel essay in it, and that was quite some time ago.

I loathe the Ancient Greeks. They spawned western society as we know it. A culture of conquerors and slaves. Proletariat and Bourgeoise on a national scale, bent on world domination.
    One of history's total phuck-ups.
Although that's just my opinion, and to answer your question, no I did not know some cities practiced socialism. Could you say anything specifically about those city-states?

The greeks were assholes! they called democrates but their society was divited this way: Citzens, the only class that could vote, citzens were natural born greeks over 20 years and men only, then the Metecas (i know taht it isnt the correct name in english but i dont know the english name for them) these were mostly emigrants and sons of emigrants, they couldnt vote, couldnt have lands but they had to serv the greek army and had to pay taxes, and then the slaves that didnt have no rights, although the greeks were known for treating welll their slaves! so i dont see any socialism in here plus Athens was imperialist athens had many colonies and had a imperialistic stance to those colonies!

freak you anarchist you racist pig. The Greeks were one of the greatest civilisations ever. While we were making empires, everybody else was living in trees searching for food. We developed many of today's political, social and economic ideas, many of the greatest thinkers of the world emanate from ancient greece, from plato, socrates, aristotle, pythagorus, europidis, et cetera. We spawned western civilisation. The rennaisance period was because Europe had to turn to ancient Greek and Roman ideas in order to progress. We were "assholes"? Freak you, why don't you read before you criticise. Greece hardly made bourgeouise culture. As Marx said it is all a natural evolution of man. Every race is responsible, and that by the way is hardly a crime.

They spawned western society as we know it.

I disagree in some respect. They invented the idea of democracy, as well as many other valuble ideologies, and inventions.

I'd say that the biggest influences on todays modern world have been the romans (imperlism).

Have you had a look at the other civilisations of the time? obviously not.

They invented democracy, and were evolving it. They had started with a monarchy, and had got as far as they did. I say they did fucking well.

Go educate your self now boy!

You must remember that they were different times. Different things were valued, and in different ways. You can't abuse them for not giving women the vote for example. Women have only just been given the vote; but now we are all brought up to think that this is right, and that it should have always been that way.

I imagine they were brough up in a similar way

ie they thought, and knew that women shouldn't have a vote.

Its all down to how your brought up, your morals and what your people value... blah blah blah

    Dan; Keep your cool.

Sorry James but calling Greek assholes is a huge generalisation and a racist comment. Like me calling all english people dickheads. Certain members here don't appreciate what they have and don't bother to research the history of what they take for granted. Without ancient Greece we would still be in the dark ages. We were one of the greatest civilisations ever and morons just disregard that. Forget out advancements in science, politics, sport, literature, medicine, architecture and the arts. We were doing things that can't even be done know with todays advancements thousands of years ago. Remember that.
