On the 23rd of July 1952, the Free Officer Movement led by Gamal Abd El-Nasser seized power in a bloodless revolution which allowed King Farouk to leave the country with a full royal salute.

i saw that some poeple on this board like nasser so much, without even realizing who he was. in 1,956, israel attacked him for the nationalization of suez. so in response, nasser deported a big part of the jewish egyptian population. and the once that weren't deported in 1,956 were deported in 1,967. and he was an oppressive dictator that did not tolerate any kind of opposition. i would rather live under the current israeli government rather than him.

The deportation of Jews isn't as bad as putting them in detainment camps like the US did to the Japanese. It was his own safety measure. Yes, he was a Nationalist, but that doesn't make him evil, and doesn't completely stop him from following *Socialist* priciples.

so now you support leaders that deport entire populations and ruthlessly oppress everyone that disagree with them?

I don't support him because of that, but every leader has faults. Why don't you tell that to the Stalinist (Mazdak? Thursday? Where are you!)? Che killed people who he considered traitors, didn't he?

I don't support this, but you shouldn't completely let peoples faults overshadow them.

yes, every leader make mistakes, but deporting an entire population for their ethnicity? i thik that is an unforgivable faults. i as jew would rather live under the zionists rahter than that racist dictator. and you are acting in a very hypocrite way. you complain about racism in america, yet you don't show strong opposition to a leader that did much more worse thing to jews than the thing that happen to black people in today america.

Your right ND. I actually had never known about the deportation issue, and was trying to defend his credibilty. Shame on me. I still don't think he is "Al-Ibn Al-Shaitan" though.

What about the Filipino nationalist guerrillas who fought to liberate the Phillipines from Spain?

Nasser, while the Soviet Union's most important ally in the Middle East, did worse than merely deport Egyptian communists--thousands of them were arrested, tortured and murdered without a murmur of protest from the USSR.

It must be admitted that he was enormously popular among the Egyptian people...and still is. Whenever he pops up in old movies and newsreels, he gets enthusiastic applause from the safety of a dark theater. Compared to those who followed him, he is something of a legend...the "George Washington" of Egypt. Compared to the corrupt, thuggish dwarves that rule the Arab countries today, MOST Arabs probably regard Nasser as a giant.
