From an international report on the death penalty.
''Bolshevistic Russia. November 26, 1917, next day after the Bolshevistic Revolution, new government prohibited death penalty. On February 21, 1918, when German troops attacked Russia, death penalty was restored for hooligans, spies etc. On June 21, 1918 admiral Schatniy was executed according to the new decree, which restored death penalty for the soldiers and officers. September, 1918 the Decree on Red Terror was issued, proclaiming death penalty for all "counter-revolutionaries." On January 17, 1920 death penalty was abolished according to the wish of Dzerzhinsky ("Russian Marat.") In 1922 death penalty was restored.''
and from Trotskys My life.
''I have said before that Lenin, from his death-bed, was pre paring a blow at Stalin and his allies, Dzerzhinsky and Ordzhonikidze. Lenin valued Dzerzhinsky highly. The estrangement began when Dzerzhinsky realized that Lenin did not think him capable of directing economic work. It was this that threw Dzerzhinsky into Stalin's arms, and then Lenin decided to strike at him as one of Stalin's supports. As for Ordzhonikidze, Lenin wanted to expel him from the party for his ways of a governor-general. Lenin's note promising the Georgian Bolsheviks his full support against Stalin, Dzherzhinsky, and Ordzhonikidze was addressed to Mdivani. The fates of the four reveal most vividiy the sweeping change in the party engineered by the Stalin faction. After Lenin's death, Dzerzhinsky was put at the head of the Supreme Economic Council, that is, in charge of all state industries. ''
And according to Leranth
''Iron Feliks" died with his political portfolio expanded beyond that of merely running the Soviet Union’s security apparati. The Cheka became the GPU in 1921 and the OGPU in 1923, with the NKVD as the parent organization. After Lenin’s death in 1924, Dzerzhinsky remained Stalin’s most formidable obstacle to assuming Lenin’s mantle until the former’s death in 1926. Stalin then quickly secured direct control over all state police and security forces and turned them immediately against all of his "Old Bolshevik" opponents.''
Hence I think he was a more complex character than any of the ones that came after.
Beria was a monster through and through.
Man's dearest possession is life, and since it is given to him to live but once.He must so live that dying he can say, all my life and all my strength have been given to the greatest cause in the world, the liberation of mankind
Ostrovski
Muriel Spark:
If I had my life to live over again I should form the habit of nightly composing myself to thoughts of death. I would practice, as it were, the remembrance of death. There is no other practice which so intensifies life. Death, when it approaches, ought not to take one by surprise. It should be part of the full expectancy of life. Without an ever-present sense of death life is insipid. You might as well live on the whites of eggs.
Beria was by far the worst, as crazy as Stalin.

Beria- the Worst? I might agree if it werent for the fact that it was Yezhov who was the head of the NKVD during the "Great Purge." Not beria. Beria was killed by Kruchsev(misspelled) during the power struggle, not because of his actions. And Yagoda was probably as bad as then others, if you consider them evil..
I ask again.
Does anyone know where i can find a biography/pictures of V. Menzhinsky. I have all the others, just not him. And i "Gotta catch'em all."
I dont like secret Polices, they are repressors, my people has suffered the enough with secret Polices! to hell with them!

But you need an spy force and such to defend your government... oh yeah, you are an anarchist... nevermind.
Beria was a child molestor in his private life and was responsible for as many deaths as Kaganovich.
RU sure they arent simply trying to demonize him. I have heard things quite contrary to what you are saying.
What? you need a secret police to defend your country? Thats stupid, we (Portuguese people) live since 1975 without any secret police, and we dont need that crap to defend us! we live peacefully and dont need any repression to defend us! "He who exchanges his liberty for some temporary security doesnt deserv neither liberty or security"
Don't worry anarchist, if there were secret police then you wouldn't know about them.
