We should be supporting the firemen. I believe this is not a case of homophobia or religious reasons. They shouldn't have been made to do it with their uniforms on. I heard on the radio that they did it last year and we taunted and groped and so on

I don't know. Like it or not, the news article definitely suggests that these firemen are religious homophobes.

Some of the firefighters from the Cowcaddens fire station, in Glasgow, had claimed that it would be "embarrassing" for them to attend the gay pride event in uniform,

Seems fair enough to me. Firefighters are not police officers, they only wear their uniforms at work, not outside of their normal professional setting. It would be like asking paramedics or surgeons to show up in scrubs, a position that would, outside of their work environment, mean that they were underdressed compared to everyone else, something that could be legitimately cause for embarrasement.

I mean, everyone who wears a uniform at work, wouldn't it suck to have to go dressed as a McDonald's employee or in a Starbucks outfit to any sort of public event? I'd think that would be kindof demeaning.

Plus, at an event where some people are likely to wear kinky costumes, showing up in a firefighters uniform, which is probably like, one of the male equivolent of a nurses uniform or a french maid uniform, in terms of sterotypical fetishy bachelorette-party-stripper type outfits, might be additionally embarrasing.

They shouldn't have grouped the people who were legitimately pissed off with the crazy christians.

while others argued that the event offended their moral beliefs.
This group though, should be fired cause you wouldn't want public safty in the hands of people with obviously anti-social beliefs.

Surely if you're a bit homophobic, it's going to be worse to go along to a gay pride parade OUT of uniform, because people will think you're just there, rather than there for work.

Sexual harrassment of any sort has to be dealt with appropriately. Workers should not be intimidated like that. But firemen don't have the right to neglect their duties to the public for reasons of "embarrassment". Because basically, if they won't hand out leaflets due to prejudice, will they be willing to risk their own lives to pull people they consider second class citizens out of burning buildings?
