I was reading 9-11 by Noam Chomsky and I read about this one part...It was about Nicaragua and the US relationship. He said something like a lot of people died because of the US, and then Ronald Reagan put a national alert thing on in the US.
What happened in Nicaragua? I know I won't find it or find all of it in a history textbook...so teach brother teach.

There's a very brief description of US involvement in Nicaragua in this piece. For more, try these excerpts from Willaim Blum's book Killing Hope, which is an amazing resource.

Also, there is a book called Contra Terror in Nicaragua: Report of a Fact-finding Mission: September 1984-January 1985 that compiles accounts of violence against civilians by the contras. I've not yet gotten to this one, but I want to.

You might also want to read about the Iran-Contra affair, I recommed Firewall: The Iran-Contra Conspiracy and Cover-Up by Lawrence E. Walsh, and also the CIA-cocaine connection, which aided the contras. For that, I recommend both Dark Alliance by Gary Webb and Whiteout by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair, but especially the former.

Economists have provided capitalists with a comforting concept called the "free market." It does not describe any part of reality, at any place or time. It's a mantra conveniently invoked when it is proposed that government do something the faithful don't like, and just as conveniently ignored whenever they want government to do something for them.

It was all that contra stuff. We helped equip and train soldiers to topple the Sandanista government and, in the process kill a lot of innocent people.

Reagen was the "communist fighter" since Truman's containment policy, Amerika decided that it would do anything possible to revent the spread of communism, even if it ment supporting complete assholes like the contras. We would support the most corrupt evil dictators in some cases that even the cappies would have to disagree with the containment policy.

the U. S. supplied the contras with weapons to wipe out the sandanista movement. the contras were complete assholes. They completely anihilated innocent people. they wiped out farming vilages and killed many people. The contras were fucking terrorists and the sandanistas were guerillas. there is a big difference. the contras were corrupt bloodthirsty animals. Amerika went too far to attempt to stop communism when they aided the contras. they went too far many other times as well but most especially by supporting the contras.

I don't really have anything constructive to add at this point... I think Vox provided some exilent resources...

... funny... I didn't really consider this history untill now, but than again, yesterday is history.... lol...

The think is, I remember those days clearly, and I think what most average Americans got out of the media's coverage on it was... Olie North in his USMC uniform saying, "I plead The Fifth" all day, every day... for god knows how long... and an aging president saying, " Heck If you where asked what you did during a particular day in August of last year... would you remeber?!!"...

Somehow if I signed a paper selling billion dollar aircraft to some questionable Middle Eastern State, in order to fun a group of Banditos... I think I'd remember something about that...

(" Mike, do you remember buying a color TV last year?"...

Mike: "Sure I do, it's sitting in my livingroom."..)
