What cities and areas in Germany are havens for Fascists thugs? What cities are more left-wing/anti-fascist? As a non-white leftists wanting to travel to Germany, which areas should I simply stay away from? I've always wanted to go to Germany, but lately I've been rethinking this decision. Last year some classmates of mine went to Germany and one in particular reported seeing some fascist activities, mainly among the youth. I know ignorance exists everywhere, but I'm black and female and don't want to have to deal with scum. With this being said, could someone update me on the presence of fascism in Germany. I shouldn't let anything hold me back, but I want to have fun, not fear for my safety.

well although im not a native german, although my mother is, and ive only travelled in mainly northern areas of germany, my advice would be to stick to the north/western regions. one thing people should realize is that germany is not festering with fascist all over the place. just because hitler brought fascism to germany doesnt mean its at a constant all time high there. its actually quite the opposite because of the fact that many germans want to rid of that history they were involved in, they want to rid of all fascism. now of course you may or may not see the skinheads walking around but people like that can be spotted all over europe believe it or not, not just germany(all of europe has a fascist porblem). however, although you may not run into a some fascist groups, you may still notice people giving you harsh looks from time to time because a lot of germany is very xenophobic, meaning they dislike foreigners. due to your skin color this will give you away more easily as a foreigner because there arent many blacks there. since you are looking for leftist groups over there to connect im sure you may have thought of going to berlin since half of it was communist for a time, but berlin has been struggling with itself for a long time. numerous uncalled for attacks have occurred from neo-nazi and communist group targeting people they believe to be non-germans. so if you really want to avoid a situation, stay out of berlin. i am just suggesting to stay in the north and western regions because most of those areas are a bit more country/farm like i guess you could say. my mothers came from Eckenforde which is a small town far up north, very beautiful area, and she tells me that Köln (spelt Cologne in english) is a great place to visit. as for bavaria(southern area) i dont know to much about but im assuming it wouldnt be a good idea to go into a very poplutated city such as Munich if you wish to maintain somewhat of a low profile. well i hope ive helped and i do greatly hope you decide to go. it really is a amazing country, dispite its reputation, but if you really want to visit some place a bit more scenic ive heard that the mountains in Austria are absolutely awesome...![]()
Eastern Berlin seems to be the fascist part - I was in Berlin not too long ago and the West was fine (although way too many expensive, posh shops) but the East tended to have more skinheads/potential nazis. I wouldn't know about the rest of Germany, but if it's anything like Poland then the small towns can be really rough especially to perceived "foreigners" and so are probably best avoided.
what do you expect; look at the government there![]()
religious fascists. <_<
I have been fine in several trips to Germany, including visiting Berlin and Munich with a black partner.
Indeed the only really bad experiences I have had as a tourist with regards to fascists has been in Italy - in 2003 there seemed to be facists everywhere in Milan.
You will not find any out neo-nazi or fascists in Germany. Germany has extremely, extremely strict rules against such things, to the point where people can get arrested for just being apart of a neo-nazi online forum/group. I really don't know what your friend meant by fascist youth.
I think half the people say are fascists and such in Germany are just radical right-wingers, and or to a minor extent apart of the skinhead scene, and not true fascists or neo-nazis. If you are talking about skinheads and such then yes, berlin is a spot, but again you shouldn't be bothered.
I invite to my hometown, München (Munich), there is loads of nice people there.

I think that especially in berlin the people should differ between skinheads and neo-nazis! Mostly they are indistinguishable, but nazis only copy the outfit of the skinheads. For people who are able to read German, please visit http://www.du-sollst-skinheads-nicht-mit-n...verwechseln.de/ ... This site trys to explain the difference between skinheads and neo-nazis.
All in all, it annoys me to hear everywhere, that people are afraid to visit Germany because of neo-nazis all over the country. I'm from Potsdam (near Berlin) and we have more than 140000 inhabitants, only 100 of them are assigned to the right wing (0.07%).
I think, this numbers are a typical example for neo-nazi-frequency in german citys, not mentionable.
People should see the nice things in Germany, not only historical mistakes.

I went to Leer, didn't see much problem with the fash...
I remember an abundance of "gegen nazi" patches and such around
can you please give a source to back this statement up. I really doubt anyone who can be described as a communist in germany will attack "non-germans".. unless you they got infected by nazbolism.
I seriously doubt that comrades from the DKP(and SDAJ), FDJ, KPD, MLPD ,Die Linke (PDS) or any RAF like group would dare to do that. Any moral communist with a concience wouldnt attack someone just for their native orgin.
Remember?

Ha! The "neo-fascist" parties in germany are having their greatest electoral success at the expense of the Social Democrats. Indeed, Merckel did not win the election because the strength of the CDU increased, it was because of the defections from the SPD to the smaller "neo-fascist" parties.
It weren't just the neo-fascists, Die Linke - PDS (ex-SED) also gained votes aswell (even more, its up by 4,1 %)
