Recently I've been watching this show a lot. Anyways, I've heard that some people think that this show is racist, and I thought it'd make a good thread. What do you think of the show? Do you think it's racist?

I personally find it hilarious. I don't find it racist at all, as he's using the stereotypes more of a way of exposing the absurdity of people that buy into those stereotypes.

I don't think its racist. Like you said, it's more like he uses his character to expose people. For example, when he was in Alabama he was his gay character. We all know that Alabama is the state least likely to welcome gays into their community, but he did so to provoke an action by the Alabamans. Ali G in real life is a practicing Jew, but he uses his character Borat to expose anti-semitic beliefs in order to get a reaction from the people. If he finds that they are homophobic or anti-semitic, his attacks get worse on that person.

Hahaha did you see that episode where Borat learns country music and goes to that bar and sings "Throw the jews down the well" and everyone sang along (here)? That was ridiculous.

The people that think the show is racist are as stupid as the right-wing idiots he makes a fool of.

Best line ever:

Ali G: So has your baby boy managed any words yet?

Victoria Beckham: Yes, he says a few.

Ali G: And what about Brooklyn?

From memory, the original show had some sexist stuff in it....but nothing out of the ordinary where mainstream TV is concerned. And, other than that, I don't think there's anything particularly objectionable about it. I mean, I suppose one could say the character of Ali G is a racist parody, but myself I'd say it's simply a parody of the Establishments view of young black men. And the films pretty funny as well....and unless my memory is deceiving me, the film actually ends up turning some of the homophobic stereotype of the characters on their heads when the fat bloke and him off The Office fuck.

I think that the show is technically racist in some aspects but that is mainly because they are trying to confront these racist stereotypes, etc.

Indeed. I'm sure a really careful analysis would show that, in some cases, it reflects certain racist attitudes....but no more than other mainstream television shows. And, certainly, in terms of racist attitudes, it's nothing like, say, the Ricki Lake show....which is possibly the most racist television show I've ever seen.

What makes you say that? (I've only seen Ricki Lake a few times but my sister watches it)
People think they have taken quite an extraordinarily bold step forward when they have rid themselves of belief in hereditary monarchy and swear by the democratic republic. In reality, however, the state is nothing but a machine for the oppression of one class by another, and indeed in the democratic republic no less than in the monarchy.

Admittedly, I'm not the most frequent viewer of the show, basically because Trisha is far better. <_<

But, essentially, in all the shows I've watched, there's been on repeated theme. That is, twenty to forty year old black people are paraded about and one (or sometimes both) of them are shown to be "Players"....meaning people who's sexual morals are "out of tune" with the morality of American society in general.

That doesn't mean their sexual morals are "bad" or "objectionable"....it just means that, intentionally or unintentionally, the Ricki Lake show has one fundamental message. And that message is that African-American people aren't capable of becoming a part of White Christian America.

Sure, occasionally there'll be a White guest on Ricki Lake, but the overwhelming majority of the time the people on the show are African-Americans and the men are "dogs" and the women are "hos". Meaning, as I said, that African-Americans aren't able to "fit into" the American moral framework....like the volk.

If you don't quite get my point, I'll have another stab at it. But, basically, in my opinion, the social role of the Ricki Lake show is to inform White Christian Americans that African-Americans are "immoral" and "bad".

Like who?

Even those people who attack the show almost always acknowledge that it is not actually racist in intent, they just "fear" the "some people won't get the joke". That kind of patronizing thinking may be frustratingly offensive, but it really has much more to do with liberal elitism than it does with "racism".

After all, it's the same kind of thinking that makes "hate laws" acceptable: we're smart enough to not be affected, but those proles are just too stupid to be exposed to it... <_<

What do you think of the show? Do you think it's racist?
Of course not.

There's racist comedy and then there's comedic anti-racism. "Da Ali G Show" is clearly an example of the latter.
I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do, so I leave it up to you...

Ali G is also mocking class bigotry. Because he uses street talk and hip hop slang, the people he interviews are more than willing to believe he's stupid. He acts like their perception of a chav so they talk down to him.

He's also having a laugh at middle class whites who mimic working class ethnic minorities.

Ali g is hilarious and if anyone thinks it's racist they must not know the meaning of irony. I could see like the PMRC finding it racist.

I remember seeing a bit of one show "should black people be allowed to adopt white babies"... WHAT FUCKING DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?

seriously, it's just as ridiculous as the older Jerry Springer Show episodes where they used to bring out the Klansmen and whatnot...
