Racism In Japan

I was wondering of anyone knew much about racism in Japan? I've read that it is not uncommon, and that Japan can be a harsh place for people not of Japanese lineage.

I've also heard that many times before. Several friends of mine that had stayed in Japan for long periods of time said that the Japanese media frequently portrays African-Americans as criminals or the 'bad guys' in films. However, the most likely explanation for that is because the American media has always been notoriously racist, so the Japanese media brings that racism into Japan.

well, that article sounds like it just about covers it, but to give some more examples from the article, i always heard that the main racism within japan was by the ethnically japanese against ethnic korean and to a lesser extent ethnic chinese (mostly bcuz there are a lot more koreans). and then theres racial discrimination against the supposedly indigenous ainu. theres also some stuff written about japanese perspectives of other ethnic groups in east asia, havent seen it in years

Racism in Japan is, from what I understand, a little different than in the rest of the world. Whereas, in the rest of the world racism is "you are one of them," in Japan it is "you are not one of us." THe Japanese media tends to downplay the racism and pretend it doesn't even exist.

Lol at that, true about their cocks. Also thats very harsh, Jap only stores!!!!!! However are the russians and communists not racist? If I remember correctly it goes like this. Russian's 1st, then rest of europe and people from Kazakstan etc are scum!!!! Is this not racist?

From my parents they said, that the communists were very racial and roma gypsies well they were just cleared out and left on a slum to die.

It seems that Japanese are kind to others. In fact, in their soul, they think the other person lower races . They look like kind, because they themselves think Japanese are the best and they cannot be rudely.
Of course, this emotion is the result of Japan's militarism education. The sourse is the ruling class. But, the fact is that almost all Japanese are accustomed to look down on all non-Japanese, includeing Aino(Japan's minority ethnic group).

I understand the anger here, but keep in mind that the racist ideas in Japanese society come from the Japanese ruling class, not the Japanese workers and farmers. Japan consists overwhelmingly of native Japanese, over 90 % I believe, which is something you won't find in any other industrialized nations.

Basically, the country is quite racist particularly towards nationalities present who consist mainly of workers. They are seen as troublemakers,etc. and are highly discriminated against as seen by that poster.

The same goes for Caucasians who are seen as loud and noisy people.

Furthermore, the Japanese are also discriminative and prejudiced against those who are Japanese but are non-native.

Basically, Japan is still a very xenophobic and traditional country despite their claims of progressiveness due to their technological advances.

I strongly agree. Though I understand c.l.l.d.'s sentiments since I am from China, I have learned since not to hate the Japanese people but Japanese imperialism and those who support it.

These really are some interesting statements as I have actually thought about moving to Japan on several occasions after college. I never once thought of the idea of racism in Japan, but after thinking about it seems sort of unstoppable. We all already know racism is everywhere. Its just a plain part of human nature that can never die. Though at the same time, there are many of us who are against racism and so I believe that there is probably a good deal of the same people in Japan. The main thing you have to think about with Japan is that they have a strong sense of keeping their traditions together. So originally Japan was either 100% or at least 99% Japanese with no other sort of mix with any other race, and now we come to an age of technology where they have now opened their borders to outsiders and really that kind of thing won't die down for a long time. An interesting note on the side, I looked into information on immagration to Japan a while back and it actually takes 10 years to become a Japanese citizen and if you decide to do so, you have to drop your other citizenship.
