The idea that ordinary workers should ever be permitted to "retire" is a late and partial development in capitalism. It was first instituted by Bismarck in Germany in the hopes of reducing support for the Social Democratic Party back in the 1880s.
The ruling classes in the advanced capitalist countries apparently repent of their "generousity" and are now pointing the way towards a situation in which working people labor until they drop dead.
It's also interesting that the French working class is leading the way in resisting this ruling class offensive.
