Call to Action – Emergency Rally
Stop the Israeli attacks on Gaza!

    Wednesday, July 5, 12.30pm
Old GPO, Bourke St Mall, Melbourne City

Since January, 2006 and the democratic election of Hamas to the Palestinian Authority, Israel, the USA and the European Union have attempted to step up their punish the Palestinian people by “putting them on a diet”. Since January, Israel has withheld US $55 million in Palestinian tax revenue which it collected as part the deal brokered during the Oslo Accords and the USA and the EU have withheld over US $100 million in much needed aid funds to the Palestinian people. During this same period, Israel has stepped up its military attacks on the Palestinian people in both the Occupied West Bank and the Gaza.

Gaza, which is one of the most densely populated areas on the planet, is now suffering a large scale humanitarian crisis. People are starving, medical supplies are non-existent and the already weak economy is now devastated. Despite, this Israel has continued to carry out its relentless military bombardment of the region.

In the first 3 weeks of June, Israel continued its policy of brutally carrying out indiscriminate heavy artillery shelling of the Gaza. During this period alone, 24 Palestinian civilians were killed another 77 wounded. Of those killed, 7 were members of the Ghalia family, both adults and children, who were carrying out the dangerous terrorist act of picnicking on Gaza beach. Two days later, Israel killed another three children during its shelling attacks.

In an attempt to bring pressure on Israel to stop the attacks on civilians Palestinian militants carried out a raid on the heavy artillery tank base at Kerem Shalom, one of the main bases from which the artillery shelling was taking place. The raid resulted in two Israeli soldiers being killed and a third, Corporal Gilad Shalit, being captured and taken prisoner.
Israel has now used the capture of the soldier as a pretext to intensify its attacks on Gaza and to try and sees the capture of Shalit as an opportunity to bring down the Hamas lead PA.

On June 27, Israeli began its invasion of Gaza, bombing bridges, Gaza’s only power station, water plants and carrying out sonic bombs in order to collective punishment and terrorise the civilian population of Gaza. Under International law, Collective Punishment is illegal. Israeli has also illegal detained over 60 ministers and legislative representative from the democratically elected Palestinian Authority.

Despite this, the Palestinian people of Gaza remain defiant and have rallied in support of the Palestinian Authority and against the ongoing occupation and brutality of the Israeli occupation forces. Israelis have also began to rally in defiance of their government and have called for an end to the Gazan onslaught and occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Now it is time for all Australians who oppose the Israeli occupation and support the struggle for justice and human rights to also rally in support of the Palestinian people in Gaza.

    STOP THE ZIONIST MILITARY ASSAULT!

STOP THE ECONOMIC BLOCKADE OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE!

END THE OCCUPATION OF PALESTINE NOW!
RESPECT THE PALESTINIAN’S DEMOCRATIC CHOICE – FREE THE DETAINED ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES!

I went to the one in Wiley Park. It wasn't too bad, there was around 400-500 people, then there was a march down the main street of Lakemba, where about 2 to 3 hundred other people joined in, as we marched. Then there was some speeches some in Arabic, some in English and a performance by a Palestinian hip hop artist.
The only problem was an old cranky man who came out telling us all to "Go Home" I stayed in Lakemba afterwards and of course, it's nothing like how it's represented in the Daily Telegraph

Thanks for the reply BD. I went, it was ok. Was quite small. I heard that there is going to be another one on Saturday, hopefully that will be more 'eventful'. I can't make it though ...
