Planned Parenthood said it will distribute free ?morning after? contraceptives at state clinics Friday to protest Gov. Bill Owens? veto of a bill that would have let pharmacists prescribe the pill.

Owens rejected the measure in April, saying that spreading prescription power beyond doctors and specialized nurses ?strays radically from the accepted norms of medicine.?

?Every woman should have it in their medicine cabinets, in case of birth control failure, or worse, sexual assault,? Vicki Cowart, president of Planned Parenthood of the Rockies, said in a statement.

    this is good.

Christ's little gestapo of the fallopian tubes, a.k.a. the American Christian Right, needs to lay off the choices, responsibilities, and entitlements to women.

I am entirely sickened by their persistence in keeping children ill-informed about their sexuality, and how they bind their children and shun them for their humanity, thus providing the conditions for a sexually suppressive adult.

The time to speak the truth has come... The government of the United States cannot be on the side of peasants because it is an ally of the landowners. It cannot be on the side of workers anywhere in the world because it is an ally of the monopolies. It cannot be on the side of colonies because it is an ally of the colonizing powers.

Aren't you a little late for Abstinance only training Cuba? =P.

On a more serious note, why aren't morning after pills being handed out as much as Condoms? Especially in places like China and India where little girls are being killed at birth because they are "not skilled enough" as workers.

Well i think there are a number of practical reasons. The first is that the typical effectiveness rate of emergency contraceptives is much lower than condoms (maybe 90% rather than better than 99%). They also tend to cause a lot of negative short lasting physical side effects, that aren't dangerous but are uncomfortable, so it doesn't make as much sense as using normal birth control pills (which are basically the same medication in a much smaller dosage and have a better side effect profile) or condoms.

I would also guess that they're simply more expensive than condoms...and because they're perscription medication in the US (cause of the religious wackos), they can't be sold to people without a perscription, they can only be handed out for free (perscriptions are consumer protection not substance control, so they effect the sale but not free distribution or possession of medical products).

Especially in places like China and India where little girls are being killed at birth because they are "not skilled enough" as workers.
Thats really not true. First of all, "little girls" aren't killed in China, some women in rural, especially non-Han China, choose to selectively abort female fetuses because in some rural, traditional Chinese communities that the Communists haven't successfully modernized yet, men are expected to support their parents in retirement whereas women are not, so a male fetus is a better investment than a female fetus if they're planning for retirement. I'm not knowlegable enough about hte situation in India to comment.

However morning after pills would have no effect in this because they only work in the period after someone's had sex but before they've become pregnant, and obviously its impossible to determine a zygote or hypothetical zygotes sex at that point. Its not the same thing as abortifacient pills.

Ah, well, I remember watching a documentary about rural China and as far as I remember India (this is before common use of abortions) that little girls would be sold off or "delt with" in other means. Such a sad state of affairs .

Handing out morning after pills like condoms would be devastating to females’ hormones. The pill is based on an influx of progesterone so the female can’t go through ovulation. If a female was to use this daily it would probably screw up their menstrual cycle. Condoms, IMO, are better contraceptive because they not only prevent fertilization but also prevent STD’s.

In regards to the China and India thing – females were being aborted because it doesn’t benefit rural families. But if I recall correctly the Chinese government was combating this due to an off balance ration of males to females – don’t quote me on that though.

Well, obviously...thats exactly the same way that normal birth controls work and those are taken every day. The entire point of them is to prevent ovulation, "screwing up" your menstrual cycle is not a bad thing if you're trying to avoid getting pregnant especially considering that its not as bad as it is naturally.

But morning after pills contain the same hormones as normal birth control pills but in amounts that are in excess of whats required if they're taken daily, so obviously it only makes sense to take normal birth control pills daily...morning after pills are for when you miss dosages or something.

True but its not always necessary for long term relationships when neither partner has any STD.

Yes its illigal for doctors to inform patients on the sex of their fetus because they don't want people to make decisions about whether or not they'll carry it to term solely based on the sex.

I think this is quite wrong though, people should be able to make *informed choices* about what they want to do during a pregnancy based on all of the information thats potentially available to them so doctors shouldn't be prohibited from telling them.
