It seems that the US may finally be bowing down to some international pressure(the suicides may have had an impact) or they may have found more suitable prison camps to illegaly detain people.

Anyways, Bush has said that he wants to close the camp and return most of the inmates to their home countries. Of course, there are the rumors that many in Guntanamo have done nothing wrong and are connected to terrorism at all.

That's just Bush saying that though, who knows how the congress will vote on it.
What interesting is that the US Gov denies that abuses are going on in there, yet conditions have caused inmates to commit suicide.

Also, he said he wants to try the remaining prisoners in US Courts, that just doesn't make sense, for one thing the offenses that the prisoners did in other countries might not have the same laws. So he's trying to get them convicted under US law, but they'd have to send them somewhere else for their sentance if he wants to close down Guatanamo Bay Prison. And that place where they'll serve their sentance might have different laws too. It just doesn't make sense.

This is just an annoyance, but he went to Hungary to commemorate the 1956 rebellion-- like there weren't Communists involved in the uprising.

This should be filed under the heading of "Be careful what you wish for,...".

The U.S. has been constructing a larger version of the Guantanamo facility on the atoll of Diego Garcia since 2002. Shutting down Gitmo is as much a way to move the "detainees" out of sight from prying eyes as anything else. No more "surprises"; everything controlled and micromanaged.

When the US closed Abu Ghraib prison, they simply moved to a new one. So i think that if they were to even close down Guantanamo, another prison would simply take its place. I wouldn't get too excited if I were you.

As WUOrevolt said, they'd just be moved somewhere else. Probably Eastern Europe where full blown torture takes place.

Someone mentioned that to me the other day.

Do you have a link to the story?

I'd like to read up on it.
