WE'RE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT
The new immigration laws proposed by the Federal Government take place in an environment where many of the values that we as Australians hold dear are under attack by the government. The draconian anti-union and anti-worker's rights legislation recently introduced will strip back many of the rights and conditions that have been fought for by working people in this country for over 100 years. The
anti-terror" laws allow Australian Citizens to be locked up indefinitely without being charged, prevent people from presenting evidence in their defence if it is deemed in the "national interest" and the sedition provisions can be used to charge people who publicly criticise the government or their policies.However the plight of asylum seekers in Australia, people who have fled persecution, imprisonment and torture in their own country, is arguably the most appalling in light of the extreme laws being proposed by the Federal government.
NEW LAWS EVEN MORE ABHORRENT
On 13 April 2006 the Federal Government announced harsh changes to the treatment of asylum seekers who arrive by boat. Under the proposed changes, all asylum seekers, including women and children, who arrive by boat will be sent to offshore detention centres for processing, and even those determined to be refugees, will remain there indefinitely until a 'third country' accepts them. Thus people who have fled to Australia as asylum seekers can be imprisoned indefinitely in offshore islands and third countries - even when they are found to be refugees!
Like many of the government's policies on refugees and asylum seekers, these proposed new laws are in breach of many international laws and covenants. Yet these take things to an absurd new level, effectively excising the whole of Australia from the Migration zone - and clearly breached Article 31 of the Refugee Convention which prohibits a state from discriminating against asylum seekers on the basis of their mode of arrival As people committed to the struggle for a fairer and more just society, we need to fight the government's refugee policies. This fight to end mandatory detention for asylum seekers is one that has been waged for years. However the matter has become more urgent, given these extreme new laws.

END MANDATORY DETENTION
CLOSE THE DETENTION CENTRES
ABOLISH TEMPORARY PROTECTION VISAS
STOP ALL DEPORTATIONS
FIGHT RACIST SCAPEGOATING

Yeah, though not at Wollongong Uni. They didn't offer the course I wanted to do, a Bachelor of Economics, so I'm doing it by correspondence through Uni of New England. How about you?
Ah, I see. I don't know who is organizing it, though, I know the Socialist Alliance is involved, I don't think the ACTU wants anything to do with it. Their strategy is to get Labor elected at the new election
