Bullshit. I don't plan to have a kid. And I don't plan to give anyone a chance to get me pregnant. <looks for "spitting at feet" smiley> Oh well... :hammer:

I think this is really increadibly upseting, that the US government would take advantage of women seeing their doctors for totally unrelated health issues to try to push the idea that they need to doing things with their bodies, not for their own benefit, but for the benefit of potential children that they don't even want. Two of the recomendations in particular, that women who don't even want to get pregnant should take folic acid every day and have routine bloodwork done to check for rubella immunity, treatments and tests which are of absolutely no benefit to the health of adults and only useful for the health of fetuses they don't even want.
Whats even worse is that the CDC recomends that women who could get pregnant not be perscribed medications like Accutane or valproic acid, which while really important to the people who take them, can cause birth defects if taken while pregnant. Maybe the most absurd recomendation though, is for women should be told by their doctors to abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages even when they're not pregnant or intending to get pregnant out of the idea that it might harm a fetus they were not yet aware of (but, naturally this being the US government, fully expected to carry to term).
One of the even more perverse recomendations the CDC makes is "activities to modify personal knowledge and attitudes and behaviors related to reproductive risk factors and the use of a reproductive life plan for women" and that "personal behaviors, psychosocial risks, and environmental exposures associated with negative pregnancy outcomes can be identified and modified before conception through clinical interventions. For certain conditions, opportunities for preventive interventions occur only before conception." In other words, if someone's attitude is that they shouldn't have to change their behavior for the sake of a hypothetical fetus they don't want, its a doctors job to make them change their attitude.
The justification behind getting doctors (and apparently hair salons!to harrass women to behave as if they're going to have a child even if they don't want one, is the idea that a good deal of pregnancies are unplanned, so a good deal of people who are pregnant wont be aware of it immediately and could be unintentionally hurting their "child." To assume that unplanned pregnancies would or should lead to unplanned children is quite a fucked up presumption to begin with. Instead of trying to get everyone to structure their lives around the possibility that they might be pregnant, they should look at unwanted pregnancy as any other sexually transmitted diesese and try to facilitate early detection and treatment so people can get minimally invasive abortions. Instead they're trying to ban non-surgical abortions and get doctors to treat their patients as if they're both incapable of avoiding pregnancy and under an obligation to have children if they have an accident.

Yeah thats nice...<_<. Return of Nazi Germany anyone? This is kind of like it if you think about it because back then females were encouraged to have as many kids as possible (kind of like what this article implies) and they were awarded for having many kids. Who can see the US going to that system? <_<

"Criticism must be sharp… If you do not do things well, I won't be satisfied with it, and if I offend you, I offend you, and that's that. To be afraid of offending people is nothing more than being afraid of losing votes and being afraid of having difficult relations in one's work with one's co-workers. Will I starve if you don't vote for me? Nothing of the sort. Actually, relations will be smoother if you speak out and put the problem clearly on the table… A bull has two horns because it has to fight. One purpose is for defense and another purpose is for offence. I have often asked comrades, Have you grown any horns on your head?' You comrades can feel your heads and see… I think that it's better to grow two horns,' because that conforms to Marxism" - Mao
Perhaps every straight person is just pre-gay. Thats about as true as the whole pre-pregnant thing. Sometimes it is true, but the assumption of which is just a conservative attempt at promoting the whole dominant masculine husband, submissive effeminant wife, 2.5 children and 3 SUV lifestyle, and everybody here see's it.

Yeah, this is total bullshit.
Anyhow, this is small potatoes, but a pet peeve of mine and I'm gonna bring it up here 'cause the article made me think of it--
Anyone notice these new parking spots in supermarkets and such reserved for "customers with children"? Fuck that, I say-- why are we rewarding procreation? Why the fuck should I park further away just cause I didn't choose to have rug-rats?
I mean, if the customer is pregnant, that's one thing. Or handicapped. But just cause you have kids you're bringing to the supermarket you get a good parking spot? Fuck all that. I park in those spots. They had to fight for parking just like everyone else before, they can do it again.
What kind of fucking society do we live in? Families don't necessarily have a right to medical insurance or decent housing, but they have a right to good parking? This country's got some seriously fucked-up priorities.

Ridiculous. I agree that this is basically condemning women to being 'baby-making machines'.
How about trying to lower the infant mortality rate by decreasing the poverty caused by the oppressive capitalist system that we live in?
