Hooliganism is a major concern for police as they prepare for the tournament, which kicks off on 9 June.

The union's president, Konrad Freiberg, said neo-Nazis had already applied to hold five marches during the Cup.

He said police would be fully stretched ensuring security at the matches and did not want an extra burden.

"The neo-Nazis have found the World Cup to be a welcome platform for their propaganda," he told a police security forum in Berlin on Friday.

At a separate World Cup conference on Friday hosted by the British embassy in Berlin, several British and German former players briefed politicians on their experiences of racism and discussed how to overcome it.

A racist attack on a German man of African origin recently raised concerns about the safety of black fans during the World Cup.

Former Spurs striker Garth Crooks and ex-Ghanaian international Anthony Baffoe attended the embassy conference.

On Saturday there will be a game between Muslim imams and Christian ministers in Berlin - part of the anti-racism initiative.

Some human rights activists have warned that black football fans coming to the World Cup should avoid certain areas of the former East Germany for their own safety.

Due to unemployment, after the DDR fell (which had next to no unemployment) everyone was left looking for some one to blame for the loss of jobs, so, like natural people blame some one like the Turks and Vietnamese who had nothing to do with the job loss.

They will win if all you do is say they wont.

I advise as many people to go there as possible give them a kickin they wont forget.

I don't have enough cash though, and hate football anyway I'm just gonna combat fascism at home for now.

You intellectuals and Bourgeois anarchists use it as a pretext for doing nothing. To do nothing, to remain motionless, arms at your sides, wearing kids gloves. Well, I have dirty hands. Right up to the elbows. I've plunged them in the filth and blood. But what do you hope? Do you think you'll govern innocently?"

I still disagree, because nobody is going to follow mini-Hitlers and all that these days. The memory is still too fresh in their mind.

They'd be stupid to march in Germany what with all the anti-nazi laws there.

The police will be on the look out for even the tiniest infringement of the law - hell Britons have been warned even against Basil Fawlty impressions.

I think there might be problems with racism towards non-white players though possibly, but again, the police will be very strict.

That is why, and I personally think that anti-Nazi laws are a good thing. I mean, I don't think freedom of speech protects racial crap.

Anti nazi laws suck. They are exactly the reason why the nazi movement is on the rise.

I'm sure there will be plenty of German anti-fascists kicking some Neo-Nazi ass so don't worry.

yeah, the brasileiros or argentines are gonna win. oh, wait, youre not talking about football? well, for anyone who says theyre not going to win, slobodan milosevich and jorg haider are within recent memory. anyway, for the copa mundial, i remember last time neonazi riots in russia against east asians after the russians got beat by japan. anything can happen. incidentally, it might make sense to watch some neo-fascists in the usa to see if theyre having world cup parties.

Today, economical issues particularly in East Germany are precipitating the rise of fascism. Remember, most neo-Nazis are too young to remember the horrors that went on during the Third Reich. As the economical problems grow there will always be support for groups who say that they have a solution and bring in scapegoats such as the recent immigrants.

Well the NPD is getting quite big in Southern Germany, so its very worrying if things could get back to the way it was. Just look at the attached picture:
