they/them/their i think, can only technically be used in the singular when talking about an indeterminate person...like, the sentince "Tell your doctor they need to up your perscription" is a correct use of the singular 'they' but "Tell Dr. Brown they need to up your perscription" is not, because even though its not apparent what Dr. Browns gender is because its a proper noun and a specific individual its not appropriate to use "they"...(really it should be "he or she" or, in writing "s/he" instead, if you don't know)...
although if you insist on a gender neutral specific pronoun, probably just using the singular 'they' is less awkward then trying to use a new pronoun cause theres no standardized set.
I think in general though too much is made out of language...its a liberal political correctness thing.

'IT' is non-gendered.
True, but trans-gendered people, may feel by being called "it," then that would seem like the inanimate objects, like "place it over there."
When we say "it," we are always talking about objects, and not people, so "it," would be derogatory.
“If anything, we are enslaved more as human beings now than at any time, probably, in man's history. But it is so sugarcoated, it's so slick, it's so polished.”-Anton LaVey
“Whoever will be free must make himself free. Freedom is no fairy gift to fall into a man's lap. What is freedom? To have the will to be responsible for one's self.”-Max Stirner
“People go to church for the same reasons they go to a tavern: to stupefy themselves, to forget their misery, to imagine themselves, for a few minutes anyway, free and happy.”-Mikhail Bakunin

You can't be serious? You really think people will appreciate others referring to them as 'it'? Disciple of Prometheus got this one right!
I was joking, i thought people would figure that out.
What percentages of people dont fit into the category of male or female? Seriously do we need to rework the entire English language to rid it of any gender particular words?
Well i dunno monty, you think the words 'homosexual' and 'heterosexual' are completely neutral after all.
I don't know, it's not my number one priority at the moment, but i do think it's something that is worth considering.
read the last three words of my post black dagger. I am not laughing at the forum, I am laughing at the particular aspect of anti-discrimination activism represented by this thread. The current obsession with language stems from the post-modern notuion that cropped up in the 1980s th\at through language wwe create and re-create reality (a notion completely runs counter to any materialist view of the world). The result is that there are people around the left that consider spellintg women 'wimmin' or 'womyn' to be a politcal act, and it fucking isnt. The terms he and she refer to sex not gender. Apart from the tiny minority of people who happen to be born with neither a cock nor a vagina the words her and she are quite sufficient. If people decide that they are something in between well then i supposwe there is no harm in them trying to come up with a new word. In the mean time i will try to think of a word that I can uyse to biological makeup if I ever decide that I am somewhere in between a cat and a human being.
There exist a few different versions. Of gender-neutral pronouns, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender-neutral_pronoun has links at the bottom to a few. (I like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ve_%28pronoun%29)
There is call for gender-neutral pronouns for a variety of reasons. One is the case of where you do not know the gender. Another is where the person being referred to does not accept either male or female as their gender
Because gender is a social construct we should attempt to change society to accept that there are more then two genders. Just like we should attempt to remove the (discriminatory) social construct of race, we should remove the idea that there are only two genders.
We should be attempting to remove (unjustified) discrimination wherever we find it. Language is one area where it is found and using gender-neutral language when there is no need for gender-specific language is one small area where you can make a change.
