Wow...This is very sad. Imagine how those minority students feel.

From the article:
"There is no intent to create segregation," said Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers, the Legislature's only black senator and a longtime critic of the school system.

He argued that the district is already segregated, because it no longer buses students for integration and instead requires them to attend their neighborhood school.

Chambers said the schools attended largely by minorities lack the resources and quality teachers provided others in the district. He said the black students he represents in north Omaha would receive a better education if they had more control over their district.
So no, there's nothing exceptionally racist here: just the acceptance of the de-facto segregated schools which have become common across the U.S. Which is bad enough.

This proposal's unlikely to lead to equal resources for the different schools; a separate district in the Black neighborhoods will have a smaller tax base. Nor would the community control be real, probably - just capitalist politicians of a different skin color.

This isn't some trendy new "multicultural" thing, actually. The demand for Black control of the Black community, including its schools, goes back to the Black nationalists of the 1970s. There was a whole fight for community control by Latino parents in New York, also, "Por Los Ninos".

This is like some distorted, back-asswards version of that, the kind of thing which arises in periods without a massive struggle pushing things forward.

Is this directed at me....because I said it was similar to the "multi-cultural" policies adopted by the Thatcher Government.

As far as I can tell, it has all the hallmarks....de facto segregation of "ethnic communities" which is coupled with the policy that these social groups bid against each other for public funds.

Whether it goes under the label of "multi-culturalism", increased autonomy for social groups, parental choice, or whatever....the result is still the same....de facto segregation.

Whether this type of policy comes across as "trendy" or not, largely depends on what section of the political establishment promotes it....if the liberal bourgeois promote it, the rationale will come across as "trendy" and "new", where as if the conservative bourgeois promotes it, the rationale promoted will likely focus on "individual choice" and "financial autonomy".

Whatever rationale they choose....the result will still be an attempt to divide the working class.

Its unfortunate that they do this but then again would you want to have racial fights between blacks and whites and possibly even gang wars between differing races?
This has always been used as a justification for segregation - mysteriously, since the worst "racial fights" took place in the days of almost total segregation. It is an utterly fallacious argument. Racial integration is the only way to stop racial violence, because segregation promotes discrimination (I refer you to Clark & Clark's psychological findings if you don't believe me). Races must be integrated, or discrimination is destined to last forever.

Being African American, I feel that I have the right to not only criticize my "peoples" (as the bougeoise have so elegantly classed us) but their actions as well.

One can only blame society failing them for so much, and then it is THEIR responsibility to make a life for themselves.

It's not "the white mans" or "the governments" fault if at fourty-five you're dealing cocaine in a back alleyway.

So when Black people do attempt to correct their situation, the State punishes them....there are over a million Black political prisoners in American prisons today because of the drug laws in America and the way the Justice system applies them.
Can you attempt to write ONE sentence without pulling a "Bill O'Reilly" Word-spinning episode? "Political Prisoners" is just as slanderous as the Republican Right.

I dunno. I live in Lincoln and see Ernie at the capitol building occasionally. He's normally at the forefront of Nebraskan anti-racism action so this is certainly odd to see him propose.

Last year Omaha Public Schools (OPS) proposed a plan to annex the Millard, Elkhorn, and Ralston school districts. Those are suburban districts which have grown a lot due to "white flight" from other areas of Omaha. The resulting increase in tax revenue for OPS could have easily fixed up the old central schools. Burke High could have really used the money, they still use some portable toilets and until recently the cafeteria was a tent. That plan didn't pass, of course, but it's probably the only way to fix up the other districts. Chamber's plan is just going to ruin the schools further.
I'll never forget CNN saying that 'thousands of people have died today in Rwanda' for 18 seconds. Then they had a one and a half minute feature on the Rwandan gorilla that is becoming extinct.

Is the local branch of Chase going to give that guy a loan to establish a "legal" business?

Well, maybe if he can find a couple of wealthy white guys to co-sign the loan.

I consider all of the people in prison for "drug crimes" to be political prisoners! Although it is well-known that illegal drug use is equal among both whites and African-Americans, it's also well known that the anti-drug laws are disproportionately applied to people of color...they are statistically far more likely to receive harsher penalties for the same offenses.

Although I don't know if there's ever been any scholarly research on the subject, I strongly suspect that this has always been the case in the U.S....right back to colonial times. The black "felon" has been treated worse than the white "felon"...regardless of the seriousness of the "crime".

And not just in the "Old South" either; there were an astonishing number of punitive laws more or less specifically directed against people of color after the Civil War in the North and Midwest.

The logic of American racism has always run along the lines of: first, we'll break his leg and then we'll use his gimpy walk as proof of his natural inferiority!

It's never been "a fair contest".

I found alot of many interesting points in your post redstar and believe you are correct in the claims about the "felon".

[sidenote]
Not criticising at all, but more a personal question on why redstar you use the term "color", in no way trying to be smart i know you aswell as i are aware that "blacks" and "whites" come under tones in the first place. In saying this is "color" the less-degenerative word to use in a practical argument?

Where practical, I try to use the terminology that people appear to prefer.

In recent years, I've noticed the phrase "people of color" used by African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans to collectively distinguish themselves from the "white majority" in the U.S. -- so I have adopted its use in my own language.

I think of this as an act of simple respect.

I'd assume that you're fully in support of Prostitution, right? These things are undesireable social phenomenon. Drugs create dependence, which is a position of power for the dealer, legal or Illegal.

Well, maybe if he can find a couple of wealthy white guys to co-sign the loan.
Next time I want to shoot someone who fucks me, I'll blame whitey for not co-signing my Entrepreneurial bouts. But on a more serious note, I don't understand why anyone needs a "business." Most of my peers are studying into education, research, and history. They include people of all ethnicities, as we share a common passion for knowledge. I have no plans to create a "business" but to share my knowledge with others.

And not just in the "Old South" either; there were an astonishing number of punitive laws more or less specifically directed against people of color after the Civil War in the North and Midwest.

Don't get me wrong, rascism has been, and is still ever-present. Keep in mind that I spend much of my time in the Northwest (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver) and I view people of countless different ethnicities in extremely powerful executive positions. It seems that "rascism" only applies to those of African American decent; those that are Asian or Indian seem to get along fine.

That's cool, it was more curiosity than anything and well i may have forgotten that you are from the U.S, since here in England we add the U in Colour.

My position is that the official persecution of those who engage in those activities causes far more harm than the activities themselves could ever cause.

The laws against those activities are morality laws...and thus beneath contempt on their face!

As applied, those laws have been and remain racist!

But on a more serious note, I don't understand why anyone needs a "business."
One needs to eat! The existing social order provides only a very limited number of ways to do that...and people of color are denied access to most of the less unpleasant ways that do exist.

The forty-year-old "cocaine salesman" of your example could be flipping burgers at McDonalds...working longer hours for considerably less money.

Sound like a good option?

He's "qualified" for the job...even if, as might be likely, he can't read. Look at the keys on a modern cash register in a fast "food" place: they have little pictures of each of the items on the menu on the keys so you don't need to know numbers or how to add them.

McDonalds knows the kind of "education" that the people they hire probably got.

In recent decades, Asians have been designated "honorary whites" by many people who are otherwise pretty racist in their views. As recently as 50 years ago, that was not the case at all.

Also, the Pacific Northwest is widely perceived as one of if not the most "progressive" region in the United States; I imagine up there that suggesting that someone thinks like a person from Kansas or Texas is a real insult!

I attempt to reply to what I think are the most "important points"...and I think this is what most people here try to do.

We don't always succeed, of course...and are sometimes rather vehemently reminded of an important point that we overlooked.

My reaction to this news?
Fascist oppression of the working class, the midwest once was the place of the populists and the John Brown Abolitionists, now it's corperate oppression.

Read "What's the matter with Kansas".
What you score on a test means nothing, it's what you actually do that should be recorded.
