Where Is France Going?
Students and Workers Revolt

In Marseille, more than 100,000 protest March 18 against “First Job Contract” (CPE) that would let employers dismiss workers up to age 26 at will, for up to two years.

Stung by the revolt last fall by youth of immigrant origins, the French government claims it will encourage bosses to hire young workers by making it easy to fire them! Youth aren’t buying it. Now the unions have joined the battle and a showdown looms. The bourgeois press intones that this is “not another ’68,” when student-worker unrest brought down the government and took France to the brink of revolution. Wishful thinking by the bosses and their kept media? The danger: as in 1968 and 1995, mass unrest could be diverted into a new “popular front” government that leaves the rule of capital intact. Come to a discussion.
