Here's part of an e-mail I received from a Comrade recently. Undoubtably many of you will already know of planned actions. I was thinking that perhaps we could build up a list of planned actions around the world. Send me a PM and I will add your protest to the list...

Global Day of Action Against US Occupation of Iraq on March 18

On Sunday 22 January activists assembled at the World Social Forum held in Caracas, Venezuela and called for demonstrations across the world on March 18 against the occupation of Iraq and more Bush wars. This was the first call made by the Assembly. Over 100,000 people attended the Forum from across the world. Stopping Bush's wars was a central theme of the whole event.

The major anti-war coalitions in Britain and the US are organising actions on this day. There will be demonstrations in Italy, Greece, Germany, and at least 15 other European countries. Action is also planned in Australia, India, Latin America, Mali, Japan, South Korea and many other countries.

The aim of these protests is to mark the third anniversary of a brutal, bloody and illegal occupation of Iraq by US and British forces and to press for the immediate withdrawal of these forces from Iraq.

And people think they have taken an exceedingly bold step when they have freed themselves of faith in a hereditary monarchy and swear now by the democratic republic. In reality, however, the State is nothing else than a machine for the oppression of one class by another, and indeed no less so in the democratic republic than in the monarchy.

I used to think I was poor. Then they told me I wasn't poor, I was needy. Then they told me it was self-defeating to think of myself as needy, I was deprived. Then they told me deprived was a bad image, I was underprivileged. Then they told me underprivileged was overused, I was disadvantaged. I still don't have a dime. But I sure have a great vocabulary.

I was at the protest in Houston. I saw myself on the news. :-p

I met a woman who was at least 70 years old come up to me and talk about communism. It was weird for a woman who could have been my grandmother to talk seriously and knowledgably with me about communism. She said that she was a "stalinist", but she was not terribly orthodox about it. As in, orthodox stalinists usually don't approach trots and speak amigably with them.

There are a lot more communists in Houston than I knew of. RCP was there and so was Worker's World.

The weird thing was the COMPLETE ABSENCE of cops. I didn't see a single fucking one. However, that could be due to the fact that we were right down the street from a military base.

I flashed a peace sign at a marine and he returned it. Later, a truck full of marines drove by and yelled "GO MARINES, KILL EM ALL". That made any hopefulness I had quickly subside.

It really pissed off one of the RCP guys. He gave a really great speech later on. Even though I completely disagree with the RCP, their members are (usually) great speakers.
