Help the AVSN plan and organise the
April Week of Solidarity with Venezuela.
Thurs, Mar 9, 7pm, Harry Heath Rm, UTS.

On April 11, a military coup, backed by the US, the media and big business staged a coup against the popular, democratically elected president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, replacing him with the head of the business federation, Pedro Carmona.

Carmona immediately dissolved the Supreme Court and the National Assembly; arrested 20 judges, 12 governors and all pro-Chavez mayors; declared the 1999 constitution, developed through popular consultation and adopted by referendum, void; cancelled 49 laws that benefited the poor, and demanded the development of close US-Venezuela ties.

Within 36 hours, hundreds of thousands of people, supported by loyal sections of the military, had restored Chavez to power, taking to the streets across the country and demanding a return to democracy and the 'Bolivarian Revolution', the peaceful process of creating social justice in Venezuela initiated by Hugo Chavez.

Since that time, despite repeated attacks and sabotage attempts by the US government and their allies, the Venezuelan people and government have been building an alternative type of society- one where education and healthcare are free and universal, workers' rights are extended, indigenous and womens' rights are celebrated, and the people are taking control of running society into their own hands.

Join the Australia Venezuela Solidarity Network in building a
"Week of Solidarity with Venezuela" in April to commemorate the victory of democracy in Venezuela, and to protest ongoing attacks by the Bush Administration on Venezuela.

The next AVSN meeting, where we can start to organise the solidarity week, will be held on Thursday, March 9, at 7pm in the Harry Heath room (near the UTS Student Association).
