MARCH 18-19 INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND OF ACTION
Facts on the occupation:
• Between 28,000-40,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed (Iraqi body count). But The Lancet, a prestigious British medical journal, estimated in October 2004 that 100,000 Iraqis have already been killed.
• More than 2,200 US soldiers have died, and more than 16,500 wounded (Iraq Coalition casualty count, Pentagon figures).
• United States, Iraq and non-US coalition partners are likely to spend US $l-2 trillion on the Iraq war by 2010 (AEl-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies)
• 82% of Iraqis are "strongly opposed" to the presence of US and other foreign troops in their country;
72% believe US-led occupation forces have made their lives less secure;
65% of Iraqis support attacks by the Iraqi armed resistance on US-led occupation forces (August 2005 survey of Iraqi public opinion conducted for British Ministry of Defence).
• Only US $3 billion of the $13.5 billion in foreign "reconstruction" pledges to Iraq has been spent. The World Bank estimates that $27 billion is needed to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure.
• Unemployment in Iraq is estimated at 60%.
•A quarter of Iraqi families are subsisting on less than $l per day.
• Iraqis face losing up to US $200 billion of the wealth of their country if a US plan to hand over development of Iraqi oil reserves to US and British multinationals is implemented.
Iraqis want occupiers out
Nearly all of the 21 Iraqi tickets contesting the December 2005 election declared their opposition to the occupation. Regular demonstrations against the occupation are held in Iraq. In response, a number of other countries are also pulling out or reducing their troops including Ukraine, Bulgaria, South Korea, Poland and Italy.
Anti-war opinion growing
US public opinion has turned decisively against the war: latest polls show 64% disapprove of Bush's handling of Iraq, and 60% believe the war was not worth fighting. Even within the US Congress there are calls for troop withdrawal.
British PM Tony Blair is facing similarly growing opposition. Here, Labor leader Kim Beazley's call for an "exit strategy" from Iraq reflects a growing anger about the Iraq disaster.
Bringing the troops home is the first step towards allowing the Iraqi people to work out how they want to run their country.
Iran the next target?
The US's quagmire in Iraq makes it harder for it to extend its domination of the Middle East. Nevertheless, it's clear that the US is intent on manufacturing a case for war against Iran over its nuclear program, and leaving open the prospect of military action. This threat of a new war must be opposed.
'War on terror'
The so-called "war on terror" has done nothing to stop terrorism, but it is being used to scapegoat Australians of Middle Eastern descent, and frighten others into believing that we are facing some yet-to-be-identified threat. The new terror laws, enacted by federal and state governments, remove democratic rights and freedoms that many Australians have fought hard to enshrine. A first step to reducing the risk of terrorism is to stop state terrorism and bring the troops home.
