I wore mine for May Day, but nobody knew who he was except for the teachers. Of those, other than my Spanish teacher, no one even cared either way.

Yeah, but its not like I have any anarchist shirts to wear or anything for may day. And of course, circle A shirts etc. would have been easily dismissed as just trying to look like a punk rocker (and horribly failing).

Reminds me of the time I saw a guy at my school wearing a Che shirt.
I asked him if he knew who Che was, he said no.
I then told him that he was a revolutionary and a communist.
After this, the guy said he will throw the shirt away as soon as he gets home.![]()
People are quick to criticise Che shirts, it reminds me kinda of hipsters, "I liked Che before he was cool" xD, and I kind of get that. It is ironic for Capitalist businesses to exploit the image of a Revolutionary. However, people should bear in mind that we live in a Capitalist society and are always buying Capitalist goods, we need to in order to survive and it is justified, so if an image of Che raises actual awareness of him, and serves to prolong his memory as a Revolutionary and a rebel against injustice, than I'm all for it.
Reminds me of a quote I came across once:
"I don’t disdain the impact of Che as a romantic image, especially among newly radicalized youth in the United States and Western Europe; if the glamour of Che's person, the heroism of his life, and the pathos of his death, are useful to young people in strengthening their disaffiliation from the life-style of American imperialism and in advancing the development of a revolutionary consciousness, so much the better." - Susan Sontag

- Karl Marx
Does it, though?
I doubt Che T-shirts are raising class consciousness across the world.
More likely, his image has been emptied of all its radical content, fully integrated by capitalism and sold as an object of mass consumption (much like the idea of 'rebellion' itself - if people feel they can be rebels and fight the system by wearing a Che shirt, that's a victory for capitalism).

I see your point, but for some at least it does raise an awareness of who Che was and what he was fighting for. I believe when I first saw that image I was unaware of who he was and looked into it, getting me interested in the Cuban Revolution.

The T shirts have been used to propagandize his image. I feel that if Che was around he wouldn't want us to do that. I would think in his eyes, by wearing his T shirts we support the very thing he tried to prevent.
