It was propaganda ...but it was also true.

Hitler didn&#39;t kill Rohm because he was gay, he killed him because his deal with the army meant that SA would not get what had been promised to them. Rohm never would have stood for this and his brownshirts could have been a serious problem.

So Hitler took out the entire SA leadership, with various excuses. With Rohm, he used the fact that it was farily well-known that Rohm was a homosexual and used that as an unofficial justification for his death (the official one was that Rohm was trying to overthrow him).

In terms of Rohm&#39;s homosexuality being fabricated by the Nazis themselves, the fact is they desperately tried to hide it for years. Indeed it was a series of leftist newspaper articles in the early 1930&#39;s that exposed both Rohm&#39;s sexuality and the SA leadership&#39;s numerous gay sex parties after Rohm and his close friends took over.

After the Night of the Long Knives, the Nazis turned around and used Rohm&#39;s sexuality to prove that he was "decadent" and "deviant" and they had been correct in killing him. It largely worked as the SA was a rather fanatically conservative organization.
