The US has repeatedly tried to overtrow the democratically elected Venezuelan government of President Hugo Chavez. They have supported a failed military coup, economic sabotage, and other attempts at destabilisation.
Their reasons are simple. Venezuela has huge oil reserves, but, instead of subsidising cheap oil to the US, Chavez is spending the money on free education and healthcare, cheap food, supporting workers' rights, and creating a new kind of society, run by the people for human need, not corporate profit. A "Socialism of the 21st Century".
The Australia-Venezuela Soilidarity Network (AVSN) is organising a national Venezuela solidarity day on December 2, the anniversary of the Munroe Doctrine (Washington's policy of interference in Latin America), holding protests, forums and fiestas around the country.
December 2 is also 2 days before the National Assembly elections in Venezuela, and the AVSN is calling for an end to US interference in Venezuela and Latin America, and an end to the media's silence and lies about the situation in Venezuela.
To endorse the solidarity day, or to get involved, email Jorge [email protected], or visit www.venezuelasolidarity.org.
