The first ever trans-Tasman day of action against ANZ will be taking place THIS FRIDAY at a bank near you. Activists from Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle, New Zealand and us here in Sydney, will be taking it to the ANZ branches and offices in protest of their involvement in corporate plundering of the Iraqi economy. This is to follow up from the success during Forbes in which Sydney city ANZ branches were closed for three days due to actions. [W00T!]
ANZ is part of the Trade Bank of Iraq (TBI) which is designed to maximise the entry of western corporations into Iraqi. The restructuring of the Iraq economy involves the privatisation of oil for the benefit of western nations and the selling off of public assets and services, at the expense of the people in Iraq. So far the TBI has given $6.5 billion in loans to over 1700 foreign corporations. If the military occupation is to end, the economic occupation also needs to be stopped.
SO...come along and get involved in the campaign to end ANZ Bank's involvement in Iraq.

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

the plan isn't to shut anz down for good, it's to get them to defect from the 'iraqi trade bank'. is this possible? probably not. they're making shitloads of money over there and any customers they lose in australia/nz would in no way compare.
even so, our objective is to educate their clients as to what their bank is doing - even if only a few people leave the bank because of it, it's detrimental to the public face of the company. i've talked to numerous people who told me that after having learnt what we had to tell them, they were seriously considering changing banks. one guy even went and applied to another bank across the street right in front of us. granted, he was a student and so it was easier for him to do than say a couple with a mortgage or something but his obvious outrage really lifted our spirits.
i personally have no engaged in dialogue with the company, but i'm friends with people who have attempted to and have been completely barred - "That's not true, we're not part of the Iraqi Trade Bank, oh well actually we are but we're not making that much money, well i suppose relatively we are but... fuck off."
people need to stand the fuck up to war profiteers, like anz, like halliburton. will it make them withdraw? probnably not. our actions are small, but they're doing something, whether its shutting 9 branches in the city down for a day or persuading their customers to change banks. it might not be much, but its something, and being radically anti-war i cant stand back and do nothing.

can i suggest that if you have customers that are up for it, get them to go inside and tell the bank manager that they are about to go acoss the street and open an account with another bank. we we're doing that when we were targeting a supermarket, and it freaks the managers out good and proper - and they in turn then tell their line manger etc etc etc. the bank needs to be able to see that you are aving an affect on their custom

yeah, that's a good idea - it's just people are so apathetic, i mean its hard enough to get them to listen to youparticularly in the city branches which we usually target. one of the actions i liked best was one where we all kinda split into different 'tasks' in one of the larger branches. they had a ticket system thing where you take a ticket and wait for your number to be called. so some of us did that and when it was our turn we'd go up to the tellers and start talking to them about why we were there, what our aim was, why we thought what anz was doing was reprehensible. one person just stood there pressing the button over and over again to try and jam the ticket machine :P and the rest of us just wandered around to the customers sitting down, and tried to engage them in conversation - something i found worked really well, after they kinda got over the whole 'what are these crazy protesters doing here argh' mentality.
well its happening tomorrow, hopefully we get people at the actionpeople have been feeling a little disillusioned with it of late [me included] but we'll see how it goes
