Reclaim the Night

Women and Children Rally Against Sexual Violence

The main focus of Reclaim the Night is:

1. To protest against male sexual violence and abuse towards women
2. To encourage a wider community response to violence against women
3. To promote women's strength and survival
4. To work towards a society which can be a safer environment for women and children

In addition to these aims, over the years Reclaim the Night has broadened to include other aspects of violence against women, such as:

* international campaigns to make rape a war crime
* challenging international traffic in women
* the exploitation of women and children's bodies
* strengthen the rights of women migrants
* strengthen the rights of women refugees who may have experienced torture and trauma

MEET Friday 28 October 2005 [it's always on the last friday night of october every year] @ Town Hall @ 7pm

MARCH to Hyde Park

BRING whistles, drums, candles, each other.

Freedom against sexual violence is a basic human right.

peace and in solidarity

Fair enough, but why can't men participate? Im against sexual abuse to. <_<

You intellectuals and Bourgeois anarchists use it as a pretext for doing nothing. To do nothing, to remain motionless, arms at your sides, wearing kids gloves. Well, I have dirty hands. Right up to the elbows. I've plunged them in the filth and blood. But what do you hope? Do you think you'll govern innocently?"

I'd hope you are! :P
But I think the logic behind this is that its an event for women to reclaim the night, so having men ther will negate the point in a way. Also um er... men from certain organisations can tend to divert attention away from the issue at hand by say... insisting on selling their organisation's magazine or paper and showing very little interest in the issue. Not mentioning any names of course. <_<

Good one rioters! I'd so be there if I could. The Womens Dept at my uni did a Reclaim the Uni night and that went really well.

i agree to an extent, in that queer men are the most likely group to be targeted by sexual violence.

but yeah, what mujer libre said is spot on. while we appreciate support from males, too often the meaning is lost and attention is diverted.

not at all

but the purpose of this particular action is to say, "we're female and we're walking the streets at night, without fear, in solidarity."

if there were men present at the rally it would kinda defeat the purpose - like they were there to 'protect' us or something. even if that wasn't actually the case, it is essentially to say that womyn should be able to be out at night, whether alone or with other womyn, without needing male supervision.

Maybe you SHOULD mention some names. I'm willing to bet there may well will be women there, diverting attention "away from the issue at hand by say... insisting on selling their organisation's magazine or paper and showing very little interest in the issue".

Clarity is a necessary part of honesty.

Agreed. I WON'T see you there. :-)
