Help Organize Resistance And Build A Revolutionary Movement Among The People
There was no way to stop Hurricane Katrina, but the chaos, suffering and death that resulted from the storm WAS preventable. The Bush Regime has murdered thousands of mostly poor and Black residents of New Orleans in a crime of historic proportions. The Federal government has just ordered 25,000 body bags sent to New Orleans. Hundreds of 1000s have been left homeless, and lives and families have been torn apart -- AND THE GOVERNMENT IS RESPONSIBLE!
The Bush Regime:
* slashed funds for flood control and environmental preservation that could have saved thousands of lives
* trapped at least 100,000 people in New Orleans by refusing to provide them with the means to leave
* denied water, food, medical care and other vital necessities to the people
* ordered the cold-blooded murder of so-called “looters” who heroically risked their own lives to provide for the basic needs of the people
* enforced and promoted the most blatant racism
Volunteers and funds are urgently needed to build resistance to the ongoing crimes being committed against the people, and to make a powerful force of the just demands of the people that their needs be met. When one goes to the Astrodome and other places where the survivors of this disaster are concentrated, the magnitude of the government’s crimes is clearly exposed by the people: “they’ve always wanted us out”, “they LET our neighborhoods flood”, “helicopters would fly over us, shine their lights; why couldn’t they have dropped water down for us?” Or as a man who grew up in New Orleans’ 9th Ward told us “Don’t say they didn’t have a plan. That ain’t the problem. They had a plan and this is their plan. Block off the city and let people who don’t get out die. They’re poor, they’re Black. Let them die, that was their plan.”
As the RCP statement says, " The disaster that looms is not inevitable IF HUMAN BEINGS ARE MOBILIZED TO PREVENT IT. If people are NOT mobilized in this way, if the government is NOT forced to take URGENT measures right away, then hundreds and possibly thousands more will needlessly die from disease and/or not being rescued". Getting REVOLUTION newspaper and the Wanted Poster out to large numbers of people can make a huge difference in focusing the anger and outrage of the people to demand that the government immediately meet the needs of the people and continue the rescue efforts. People need to be mobilized to act together to demand that the government not continue to let people die right now. And the paper and the Wanted Poster can be part of creating the groundswell throughout this country to hold the Bush Regime accountable and to drive it from office for its crimes against the people.
WE DEMAND:
•At the government’s expense: People must be housed and cared for until they can safely return to their homes; hotels, convention centers, and other buildings must be provided to people in need of shelter; there must be free communication for people to contact relatives. Immediately, there must be emergency medical care and measures to prevent massive epidemics and needless dying. There must be no arrests for so-called looting. There must be emergency relief –people must be immediately provided with water, food, medicines, and other basic needs FREE OF CHARGE.
•The needs of all must be met, with first priority to those most urgently in need. There must be immediate, orderly, and safe evacuation. If necessary, events in nearby cities must be cancelled to accommodate people. People must not be evacuated into situations which are going to reproduce disease and danger.
•There must be intense search and rescue efforts in all areas. People must NOT be allowed to die. All necessary resources, including mobilizing volunteers, must be brought to bear on this. The government must not repress people who volunteer or prevent them from helping, but instead, must assist these efforts.
•There must be no profiteering and speculation off people’s misery by the sharks of insurance companies, oil monopolies, real estate developers, etc.
We call on all those who burn with love for the people and hatred for their oppression to make history. We cannot allow the Bush Regime to get away with this monstrous crime -- and more in the making. If they’re allowed to get away with this, it will only mean more death and repression. The government is already turning down much-needed aid that does not fit into their program, and are using this crisis to jack up police state measures against the people. COME TO HOUSTON, and join with the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA in reaching out to those who have fled this disaster, to help organize them and others to fight for these demands.
These are times when the future of humanity is at stake. We urgently need volunteers to:
* help distribute 10s of thousands of the special hurricane edition of REVOLUTION newspaper to the people, and to build the presence of this revolutionary voice among the people. To tell the truth about this crime and the system that spawned it.
* to write for REVOLUTION and give voice to the voiceless; to contribute photos, poetry, and help with translation. REVOLUTION must truly be the voice of the people in these times.
* TO RAISE FUNDS ---1,000s of dollars are needed to print and distribute the newspaper, 100s of thousands of flyers, and to build the organized strength of the people through this crisis; to link it organizationally and politically to the kind of movement that can Drive Out the Bush Regime, and to build a revolutionary people within that who can go on to become the emancipators of humanity.

Here you have the RCP trying to make poltical gains out of tragedy. Much like our good friends from the GOP.
Just look at all the progress the RCP has made so far; well lets see, America is still an Imperialist Nation, Capitalism is stronger than ever, the people they wish to liberate want nothing to do with them, well.. uh I guess they look cool holding picket signs. And Im sure they have great snacks at their meetings.
The RCP is a joke. Seriorus revolutionaries should examine the true intent of the RCP idealogy and then run the other way.

You can say what you want about the RCP (and I'm no fan of Avakian either), but they are active, and they do spread communist thought and theory, which is more than most do.
In my area, the RCP shows up to pretty much every protest and is actively speaking with workers and gets right in the media's face. I have discussions with them pretty regularly, and quite a few of them are not dogmatic Avakianists.
I'm no Maoist or Avakianist, but if I had to choose a group of RCP'ers out there fighting the good fight, or a group that does nothing......I'd take the RCP'ers.
At least for now.

To MKS: I don't understand why you criticize the RCP for trying to do some good political work in the wake of this tragedy. Wouldn't it be a good thing if we had a revolution and abolished the system that caused the tragedy to happen in the first place, and put the people's needs in command rather than profit?
To Disgustapated: There ain't no such thing as an "Avakianist" -- Bob Avakian is applying Marxism-Leninism-Maoism to the current situation in the world and has made (and is continues to make) some important breakthroughs himself in many aspects of revolutionary theory. But I feel it would be incorrect to characterize his contributions as raising Marxism to a qualitatively new level -- just as it is incorrect not to study and appreciate the actual contributions that Avakian has made to revolutionary communist theory and MLM in many sphere, like organizational principles and epistemology.
Damnit I clicked this thread thinking there was going to be something about revolution in it, but instead it was about the RCP.
