first off: schroeder is no real leftist. he had some social ideas and he has a working class background (which, lets say, 99,999% of the german politicians do not have).

his mother had 5 children and she had to work hard to care for them.
he once worked as a construction worker (!!&#33 and as a salesman. after that he went to university where he fought hard for his career and he later became a well known lawyer. well, if you compare schroeder to the american republicans you can be sure he is a leftist.
he gave much money to the corporations by lowering their taxes. but on the other hand he gave poor people a chance to go to university by raising the student loan and by fighting against study fees.

schroeder is hated by many conservatives. he was the lawyer of a former communist terrorist, he married 4 times and he does not seem to be very religious, even though he calls himself a protestant.

i can't really say what is going on at the moment. - people still respect schroeder for some things he did (raising student loans, not taking part in the iraq war etc.) but i think he won't win the next election.

merkel would be the worst choice for the people. the conservatives are planning to introduce a general tax system which means that everyone has to pay the same percent of their income (i think they were debating about 25%), no matter what you earn. at the moment rich people have to pay according to their wages and poor people just pay a few percent. and of course they will introduce high study fees in order to prevent working class people from studying.
to make it short: merkel = bush
    they have the same ideas.

one typical aspect which you will find in germany is stupidity: 95% of the people here are fucking stupid. the don't care about anything - as long as there is enough beer and tv.
